Kinja'd!!!

How many of the world’s top 15 car manufacturers have you owned cars from? I’m stopping at 15 because after that the list starts to be dominated by Chinese brands I guess most of us have never heard of, never mind owned. Cars from brands which were independent when yours was built but are now part of a big brand count.

The most recent authoritive list I could find was 2015 . In that year, the largest manufacturers (by production volume) were:

TOYOTA 10,083,831

VOLKSWAGEN 9,872,424

HYUNDAI 7,988,479

G.M. 7,485,587

FORD 6,396,369

NISSAN 5,170,074

FIAT 4,865,233

HONDA 4,543,838

SUZUKI 3,034,081

RENAULT 3,032,652

PSA 2,982,035

B.M.W. 2,279,503

SAIC 2,260,579

DAIMLER AG 2,134,645

MAZDA

I can claim 9 of the 15: I’m missing Hyundai, Suzuki, BMW, SAIC, Daimler, and Mazda. I can see myself picking up a Beemer or Mazda at some point, but the others don’t have a lot in their current or back catalogues which rattle my cage, with the honourable exception of a few Mercs which realistically I’ll never afford.

Also: surprised to see Suzuki at #9? I was. Turns out it’s because they’re really big in India: around half of their total production is Marutis.

This post brought to you by musings based on MiniCooperS2000TypeR53 's “Rank all the cars you’ve owned” post.

I’ve owned one Cadillac and one Subaru.

That’s a pretty diverse list I would say.

Only 4 on that list. Ford, GM, Nissan, and BMW. Does a Chrysler (Jeep) product from before they were owned by either Daimler or Fiat count for this list? If so, 5.

PSA, BMW, VW, Fiat, Subaru and Mitsubishi. The latter two are not on the list, so only 4/15.

I have 1, a Toyota (and even that was technically owned by my parents.) I did own a Ford-era Volvo so maybe that counts. I think even if we count every car I’ve ever driven, that still only makes it to 8. I’ve ridden in all but Suzuki and SAIC (I think, don’t remember everything I rode in in Beijing).

Ford era Volvo counts, for sure. If we’re going to include cars we’ve just driven, I’ve got the full set - even SAIC, since they own the rubble of MG.

I have owned cars from Toyota, VW, GM, PSA, Nissan, Renault, FCA and BMW. Is Opel now among GM or PSA? I have one from either so Opel’s place doesn’t change my list. Only one of my cars is from a different (defunct) group.

Bah, I’m disappointed I’ve owned even three from these, although I have excuses. It’s Alfa (for Fiat) and MG (for SAIC), and the two BMWs I’ve owned have been flips.

Technically BMW owns Triumph too, but seeing as they’ve done precisely jack shit with the name I’m not counting it ;)

I’ve owned 3 Mazdas, 2 Fords, and a Daihatsu, who are now a part of Toyota. I guess I also kinda owned a Hyundai for two days, long enough to cut the roof off and hoon it at the beach.

4/15 but damn it, Mazda make some great cars.

Off-topic, but I’d love to see a Jagroen. It’d have to have two engines, both V3s, only steer by the rear wheels, inboard brakes and vacuum lines that run through the headliner, as well as everywhere else.

Yeah they bought the name alongside Mini and MG when they bought Rover in the late 90s (I think, maybe early 00s). After a decent period of mismanagement Rover went under and various bits were floated. MG and Rover went to SAIC with a decent amount of the engineering (like the K-Series), while BMW kept Mini and Triumph.

I get the feeling they were planning to make the Z3 something of a relaunch for Triumph (looking at the design of them they’re uncannily similar to the Spitfire), but for whatever reason decided it would do better as a BMW.

That makes more sense to me than any fear of a relaunch of Triumph competing with BMW (they were a BMW competitor back in the day, but I don’t think they had enough cache in the 00s to make a real stab at it).

Hmm. Had a Nissan with a Holden (GM) badge. A Diahatsu (now owned by Toyota). A few Land Rover’s (was BMW, was Ford, now neither but still not on the list and they were all made in the British era anyway). A Fiat made by the Russians. A Suzuki. And a Volkswagen.

The Boss has had a Honda and a Subaru in the time we’ve been a team.

I’ve no idea how to add that up...

Unless you’re a dedicated Brit-o-phile, it’s pretty hard to avoid them. Pretty much everything’s wound up in the hands of the big boys eventually - the UK is the exception because most of what didn’t wind up with Tata (#20) got abandoned in the junkyard that was the Rover implosion. Did SAIC also wind up with rights to any of the more obsolete BL brands like Wolseley and Austin?

Kinja'd!!! "Distraxi's idea of perfection is a Jagroen" (distraxi)
09/25/2017 at 18:08, STARS: 0

I think the engines would need to be straight 12s - Jag cylinders come in 6-packs. and it’d be hydraulics through the headliner -or more likely through the exhaust,it needs to be more flammable. You really need a 60s Merc if you want stupid excess of vacuum lines (outside of the engine bay, where jag V12s are king). Apart from that you’ve nailed it. But it’d be pretty as fuck and capable of doing 100mph across a plowed field without spilling your champagne.

I mean, I guess Hyundai and maybe Kia are like Toyota and Honda of the 80's/90's. I saw a new-ish Sonata today and thought it was a Subaru Legacy. But then, squint a little and every mid-sized sedan looks the same from 150 feet, I suppose.

Yeah it is really. It’s basically only a handful of dead brands and some of the more bespoke supercars (oh, amd Volvo and Saab).

I think Wolesey and Austin did wind up somewhere, either with BMW or SAIC...

Also, I had 2 RX-8s, and crave another one. I think that says enough :)
