“Not a (complete) CAAAAAAR”

Kinja'd!!!

$15k for an improved chassis, rear, end and big brake kit really doesn’t seem that bad.

NP. This is not for a typical backyard toy build.

Art Morrison makes ‘em too.

these things are totally worth it!

I would say NP for a car that is typically unibody. One of the things I took the most note of was my dad’s 69 Mustang Fastback’s high amount of chassis flex.

The one with the Heidts IRS is just gorgeous. I want the G-body one so badly.

Yeah, they are really works of art.

People may balk at the price until they try to do this a la carte. Just building for 345 rear tires in an A-body alone is a lot of work! Buying a well engineered roller will save weeks of labor and everything will work as a system.

Same thing with the DSE C3 vette stuff. Yeah, when all is said and done it’s ~$20k but the entire rear suspension has been modernized and upgraded. It doesn’t even use the stock diff housing anymore!

I mean I have at least $6500 into my suspension wheels and tires, and that’s upper and lower tubulars, coilover, some bracing and big sway bars. Granted wheels are going to be another 3K on top of the Chassis, but this is the “right” way to make an old muscle car handle like a brand new one.

And (as we recently learned) you don’t have big money into your rear yet. A 9" that can take 1000hp and road race/drag abuse is not cheap. At all.

I mean I’ve got $1000 into upgrading, repairing my 7.625 now. A 7.625 should handle road race / track / autox use with how I have upgraded it, but Drag racing on slicks? Nope.

Just realized I never asked- are you gonna mini-tub before your wheel upgrade?

No, i think if anything I will get a 60 inch wide Ford 9 inch. that will add a full inch to each side allowing me to fit some wider tires in the rear with room for little more back spacing. on the front, without running spacers you’re limited to 275's and some custom BS wheels. I’m hoping these cars become more popular and more wheels are available with off the shelf wheels that will fit.

I’m seeing more and more G-body product lines being introduced. So that’s cool.

Pardon my ignorance here, but how difficult would it be to make a chassis like this from scratch? Is the cost more in the engineering work rather than raw materials and labour?

Not an expert, but it’s the engineering. IIRC it’s made from steel, but it has extra bracing that the OEM frames didn’t have. Although it’s probably better steel too, but I doubt that’s were the money is.

Yes. Much of the cost is in design and engineering work. But there is skilled labor involved.

Hmm... definitely aerodynamic but I’m thinking of “The Dark Knight” where Batman switches to laying forwards and if you could make the car be like that for normal driving? Instead of sitting and driving you would drive laying down... I think it could possibly work with paddle shifters and motorcycle throttle type controls?
