Hagerty hosted a car show, it was more of lawn chair behind the car type but still good.

Hagerty was also doing test drives (age 16-25) on old cars to get young people to learn stick. They had a 1968 Corva Corsa convertible, 1964.5 mustang (3 on the floor), some 1950something MG saloon, & a 1970 Chevelle SS. I drove all of them except the Chevelle, it over heating & was low on oil. I liked the Corvair the most. The old car bug also bit me.

Looks like a nice show.I cringed when looking at those Yenko stripes on the Chevelle.

Yeah Hagerty does those driving events all over, my grandpa and I was asked to take out classic three pedal cars to use, but there was no way a 16 year old was getting in either car. My 68 has the original clutch still in it, so I baby the heck out of it, and my grandpas truck he had at the time was way too much power for someone who isn’t used to it. The event got cancelled because no one wanted to use their cars. While the idea is a good one, there are not many I6 or low horsepower V8 classics that you can kind of thrash on to learn a stick.

They only said experienced manual drivers can have a go in the Chevelle. There were 4 in our group, 2 of us knew how drive stick already. The other guy had a go in it, but as soon I go to it I’m told it’s having a over heating issue. It was burning lots of oil.

I will say this in the defense of the lawnchair crowd: I do it at a local show, since it’s the same cars week in and week out. Why do I go, then? Well, it’s an excuse to get the car out for a drive, since Dad doesn’t like driving them (He thinks he’s cursed because he doesn’t have the greatest track record with them- it’s more due to the amount of time they’ve sat than anything)

That said, unlike a lot of them who can’t be bothered to talk to people, I’ll gladly talk with anyone who’s willing to.

You are not wrong, I kinda agree. It gets them out, & seen. Better then never leaving a garage.

Oh - must’ve missed you. I drove the three as well. Last year, they had more than a dozen MG Bs, Triumph TR6s, and a few other small British sports cars. Those were a lot harder to learn in - more imperative to keep revs up in those.

I did the later session, so you probably went before me, and we might’ve merely glimpsed each other.

I was the only East Asian there, I think.

I also wore a blue shirt and pale shorts :O

I went to the 1:00 session.

Oh, I did the 11:00ish session - the Chevelle was apparently running fine in the morning, but parked before our session started.

I stalled the Corvair countless times because it was shifted into 3rd gear when we started. I then proceeded to do flawless starts once it was in the right gear. Also was glad I fit, since the MG Bs last year had extremely deep footwells, and the seat couldn’t be adjusted far enough forwards (short person here).

I’ve wanted to try out a Corvair for quite awhile, since my attainable dream car would be a 4-door hardtop Corvair (65-69), preferably a ‘67 for the fancy 1867-1967 Confederation YOM plates available.

I did not stall any of the cars once (HA HA), found the 3spd in the mustang weird. Super long gears.

As you can tell, I’m no expert - no family/friends with a manual (car enthusiasm doesn’t really run in the family among visible minorities), so I was pretty satisfied with my results in the Corvair.

I’ll probably end up buying a cheap manual car to learn on next summer, and suffer the high insurance rates of a 20-year-old male being the primary driver.

I had manual Corvairs for years - finding third instead of first is real easy to do.

A lot of four-doors were sacrificed to keep coupes and converts on the road. They do still show up on kijiji sometimes, but are typically automatics. (A 140 auto with A/C is a nice find.)

Pedantic Corvair person - if it was a ‘68, it was a Monza. No Corsas after 1966. :)

The local British car club was okay with it last year - they partnered up with Hagerty, so most cars last year were MG Bs and Triumph TR6s, with an MGA, TD, and Esprit Turbo as well.

It was pretty difficult for me, since it was my first time, and I was a hair too short to fully depress an MGB’s clutch even with the seat fully adjusted (which is to say, not much).

Yes, I believe it was a 66.

They held it at the Edenvale Aerodrome this year, since Hagerty decided expand their events for the family.

Last year, when all the events were just manual Driving Experiences (no shows, no simulators, no crafts), they had it at the Caledonia Fairgrounds , where there was an actual loop to drive, and more shade (no shade at an airport, as you can imagine).

I do notice that most are automatic coupes when I infrequently browse (can’t afford one yet ...). I’d be okay with any bodystyle - they’re all stylish to me, but the 4-door is less common and it’s the most stylish 4-door to me.

If I were doing this again (I’ve had three and am quietly mulling a fourth), I’d be watching Michigan Craigslist. Yes, it’s a bit of a hike from Toronto, but there are more and they’re cheaper. Upstate NY isn’t bad, either.

Up near Wasaga - that’s an interesting spot for it. I’ll have to watch for this next year! (Watch them not have a Corvair for me....)

Ask your insurance agent what the lowest cost vehicles are to insure that meet your basic criteria. They can help.

Also - re Corvairs - while the 4-speed is more fun, the powerglide transmission is really, really tough and a pretty easy drive. A 140/pg could be neat and the 110/pg I had for a few years was rock solid.
