I’m on my way back into Toronto, after spending my weekend at an aunt of my mother, that moved to Canada from the Netherlands in the 60s.

I had such a good time there, her and her daughter where very excited to meet me (again in the case of the former), and both were very kind to me. I could not leave without taking home a lot of food for instance. Now mind you, she had already completely stuffed me during the weekend, haha.

Also, I got to drive her Buick Verano (which is just an Opel Astra, which I told her) all the way back from the her small town in the middle of nowhere to Oshawa. Not that the Buick was anything special, but driving on Canadian roads took some getting used to...

But now I’m pretty bored, so AMA!

It’s very good! Quite the culture difference with the Netherlands though, but I still quite like it. Also my research is very interesting, so that also keeps me happy during the week.

Oh, and it feels like it is about 6 million degrees here in Toronto (damn humidity).

Were you west of Toronto? Sometimes it’s Van Der everything where I live. Most of the farms are Dutch owned.

No, I was east, in Oshawa/Lindsay. My own last name does start with Van De, though, haha ;)

Vandevelde, Vandermorsel, Van Morsel, Derwettering, Van Bakel, VanDerPump, a few hundred more, some of which I can’t pronounce. Just in town I counted 114 last names with Van at the front....

Haha. Yeah, I can imagine some of those are hard to pronounce. You would expect a lot of people to have there last names changed to make it easier, looks like they didn’t though...

A lot are recent immigrants fromantic the 50th and 60s or later. We were laid back on the names being changed back then...

Unless you were from asia. Then we made you change your name. I went to school with Sara Su Yang and Bin Trahn and Randeer Sarah. Finnished Grade school with Steven, Ben and Ron.
