14 minutes into a 3 hour ride I was adjusting my seat post and the clamp exploded.

I was able to take someone’s truck back to my car and then I backed over my wheel.

The seat post clamp may be covered under warranty but I’m going to have to buy a new front wheel and brake rotor. My guess is it will be close to $300-350 for the wheel.

Since the ride was cut short we took the work boat out on the lake for about an hour to make sure it’s running well. We are taking it to lake pond d’ore next week to do some hazmat spill response training. The 150 jet seems to do about 30 mph and gets up on plane pretty quick.

That wheel looks like it could be respoked and re-trued with some effort. Might be worth doing to save $300. If the brake rotor is bent, you’ll probably still have to replace that.

I’m going to let the shop see if they can repair it first. I can’t tell if the rim is actually bent or if it’s just the 4 broken spokes that is the issue. Yeah the rotor is toast, you can’t straighten those out and expect them to work correctly.

Spoke tension is what makes the rim stay circular and true. From your pic, the rim itself looks in good shape. Should just need new spokes and a re-true.

Yep I know all about that stuff.. I used to build all my own wheels. These are bastard straight pull spokes with proprietary hubs not typical J-bends. They will have to come from specialized.

Bummer.

When I ran the service dept at a shop, about half our high-end clients would opt for hand built wheels. We had a rep for doing quality work, and loved recommending the serviceability of standard spokes. I still get excited at the thought of DT Swiss hubs...

Your shop will advise you well. I’d just want to be certain the eyelets in the rim weren’t stressed.

You’d be surprised how many disc rotors I trued up... as long as they don’t rub and thereby drive you bananas, they can often be made serviceable.

Good wrenching to you!

That sux I’m guessing if u ran over the wheel it’s done. I’ve been riding with afront derailleur that has a broken mount.  it’s fine as long as I stay in middle gear

I was going to build my own wheels this spring but all the parts added up to about the same as these prebuilt wheels from specialized. The hubs are made by DT Swiss, I don’t know where the rims come from, but they have been great so far.

An oval Roval should come as no surprise. Though granted you did have to run over it first. You probably did yourself a favour. I hate proprietary spokes.

I think you’ll find the rims are from Alex. They make some very under rated XC and enduro rims.

These have been bomber so far, I’ve gone 500 miles, done several dumb jumps on them and they are still true and round.

Call specialized to see if they have a replacement plan..
