After getting my wife’s Versa’s passenger side airbag replaced 6 months ago, they just now informed us that the driver’s side also has a recall. The letter from Nissan said that she shouldn’t drive it because that’s how you get shrapnel. The letter also said that the repairs would be available sometime in spring of 2018.

Um, you didn’t feel it necessary to warn us about the driver’s airbag when you fixed the passenger side? Thanks, Nissan.

Also, the dealership has been nice and shitty about this. Nissan USA promised a rental car until the repair is ready, mostly paid for by the Takata settlement, I’m sure. However, the dealership’s response when my wife tried to set up an appointment for the rental was “are you having problems with the airbag right now?”

“Yes, I have shrapnel embedded in my face, thanks for asking.”

They’re giving us a rental car sometime this week, supposedly. As for the Versa (2009), my wife still loves it and wants to keep it after the recall is performed. I’ve tried to talk her into something new, but she loves that Versa. Even though it’s not an “enthusiast” car, it is built with a level of simplicity that does not exist anymore. Also, there’s a lot of sentimental attachment for us, since it was our first big purchase right before getting married.

I had my Corollas passenger airbag replaced last year. I hope the driver one is fine. I checked and it hasn’t been recalled yet. I didn’t get a loaner car at all when they did mine. I had to bring it in and then got put on a list. 2 weeks later they called and said they could put it in and I didn’t have a car for a couple days.

In Nissan’s defense, the reason they didn’t tell you the drivers side airbag was an issue was because they didn’t know it was an issue. They are going off of what Takata tells them are suspect airbags, if they didn’t tell them until now, they had no reason to recall the airbags before now. Granted the dealer’s treatment of you isn’t exactly top-notch, so they are still being a little shitty.

The whole Takata issue started out fairly small, but has just ballooned wildly out of control and is, last I heard, impacting something like 30 million cars. Takata is(was) the largest airbag manufacture in the world, and there literally aren’t enough airbag production lines in the world to make airbags fast enough to fix this mess. Takata itself has already gone under and been bought out by a US-based Chinese-owned company, but they didn’t buy out the airbag section. It’s so bad that it is not expected that all affected cars will be fixed until 2023, and due to Takata’s bankruptcy most car manufactures are going to end up paying for the airbags out of pocket.

This whole episode is a good example of why some corporate sectors need government oversight.

Yeah, I figured that was the source of the delay. This puts the car manufacturers in a difficult spot, so hopefully they will do better due diligence in the future when they source their parts, especially safety equipment.

Yeah, my BMW went over a year with a bad driver’s side airbag and no date even for a possible fix. I wasn’t as concerned with that one, since it was a newer car.

I got another notice about the airbag in my M3, fianlly called a dealer and they ordered the part. Apparently there is also a recall for a battery cable, had no idea about that one.

My TSX also only had the passenger side recalled. They had them in stock at the Acura dealer and I got it done (along with what appeared to be 4-5 other TSXs) quickly.

Wondering if they treat people like shit if they don’t have their car serviced there? Would they treat a GT-R owner that way?

Thanks for the reminder. I need to call Ford because its we’ve now been on the waiting list for 2 yrs for an airbag on our Edge. Audi got us a non-Takata replacement for the A3 since Takata had such a delay in the supply chain. That still took about 18 months.

We have serviced our car there. They used to be exceptional, but have taken a turn over the last year or so.

That’s crappy treatment for sure from the dealer. I’m glad to hear about the rental offer though.

My inlaws had three vehicles that were part of the recall. All three had the driver’s side recalled and one had both. They received the same style of letter, “Replacement parts are currently unavailable. Please discontinue driving till the recall is performed”

They weren’t offered a rental, but I think they received the letters before the settlement was finalized. Hopefully that was the difference.

That is curious. Dealer-serviced 2 of my new cars - ‘87 300D and ‘97 SHO. The Mercedes dealer has changed hands and moved, but they gave me excellent service and would even throw in repairs they discovered needed doing - never paid to do differential oil (they even let me do it myself once on shop night). I highly recommend getting under your cars at some point.

Second is Hill & Sanders Ford, Wheaton MD. Still there, now called Lindsay Ford. Great service (of course, 20 years ago) although the SHO had nothing break on it except the trunk CD changer (hardly Ford’s fault).

I’ve been waiting a YEAR AND A HALF....

Got the notice for my driver side, parts on backorder. For 10 months. Get notice parts are in. One week later receive passenger side recall. Parts still on backorder for THAT side.
This is on my dragstrip/quasi show car....

No, it won’t be fixed until sometime in spring. They’re going to (hopefully) provide a rental car sometime this week to drive until then.
