Oooh fun. My Scion xB has been more reliable than any other car I’ve ever owned. It just won’t die. And my ’87 Scirocco 16V was such an utterly miserable piece of crap that just about ruined my life. Yay for cars

That was my first brand new car. I was working for GM, and ordered it in the spring of 1990. Black with a white vinyl interior, and pretty loaded, but a 5 speed manual.
The car was a load of fun, and would have been high on the list if it hadn’t gone through so many turbos and head gaskets.

Yup. From about 1985-1990, the Sunbird GT (hidden headlamps) had the turbo motor. In 1990, there was no GT convertible, but you could add everything the GT had except those hidden headlamps (so I did). In 91 or 92, they gave up on the turbo and dropped in the same 3.1 from the Z24.
Mine had a 2.0 making 165 HP. I think that was 20-25 more than the 1990 Z24 but that’s all memory - I might be off.
They’re unicorns now. My experience wasn’t that unusual. I know J cars are like cockroaches but not those turbo cars.

Long story is long, so prepare yourself.
Bought the first in late 2008 because it was cheap and I needed a car.
During the time I had it, it blew a main seal and destroyed the transmission (bought a $200 used trans), dropped a valve seat and puked the engine (bought a $350 used engine), and then launched the spider gears out the side of the case and killed a second transmission. Also the floor rotted out and I hit a deer.
By then I was more poor than when I’d first bought it, so I could only afford another Escort with a blown motor. At least this one was a stick.
11,000 miles after swapping it in, it dropped a valve seat and puked the motor.
I still was poor, so it got a different motor for $350. When that motor started acting up, I got a reman cylinder head with improved valve seats. But the first head had a pinhole leak into the water jacket so I had to replace the reman head with a new one under warranty immediately afterwards.
At that point I wasn’t so poor anymore and had another vehicle, so I sold in 2014 it to someone who was poor enough they had to take out the $1200 loan for it from a check cashing place at 650% interest.
I last saw it on the road six months ago, and the guy had put 80k on it since he bought it from me 3 years ago.
I’ve let everyone who knows me in real life that if I ever buy a Ford Escort again, it’s a cry for help and that they need to take me out in the woods and shoot me to end my suffering.
