Damn I would love to witness this. Harry Potter has some great music in their films.

We’re supposed to be doing every movie eventually. Next month we’re doing Star Wars Ep. IV. We’re rumored to be doing all 6 of those too. I’m really looking forward to that.

Oh yeah, and we’re also doing Fantasia and Jurassic Park this season.

Jurassic Park music is a staple of my childhood. My girl would go nuts over Fantasia and Star Wars would be incredible to hear!

Bought Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone in Paris at Shakespeare and Company. People always do a double take when the see title and say “Wasn’t that called something else?” I always deny that it was released as the “Sorcerers Stone” in the US. I’m hoping to start a Berenstien Bears conspiracy theory, but for Harry Potter.

What’s with the scratchy plastic screens?

The are sound shields to keep us from killing the bassoons.

The conductor got the crowd all ginned up before the show and encouraged them to hoot and cheer and yell during the movie. So every time a main character appeared on screen the first time there were cheers (or boos), the loudest of which was for Hermione. Partisan screams abounded during the Sorting Hat scene (the conductor wore a Slytherin tie). It was kind of like a screening of Rocky Horror. So it was fun. It was most interesting to see when the crowd was silent, particularly at the end.

That’s the thing—Williams writes very hard music, but since he knows so much about the instruments, he writes stuff that is playable. It’s hard, but you can work it out. I’ve played music that is both hard and poorly written.

Ah, the symphony in Virginia that wishes it were called the Virginia Symphony, which is in Norfolk. I grew up in Norfolk and studied with the principal trumpet in that orchestra. It used to be called the Norfolk Symphony, but changed its name back in the 80s, much to the consternation of their colleagues in Richmond.

I did! It was great fun. I’ve heard many film scores and thought that they would be great fun to play.
