Dududududud drive CLITORUS

The real problem here is that it still takes up as much space as a shifter. Although I’m sure visually it makes the interior seem more spacious.

Also I feel sad for the future gear heads who will never do sweet e brake slides in their first car, because of these freaking electronic parking brakes. Although some cars will still let you do it. I slide around with a new Fusion but the little button just doesn’t feel as badass as a proper hand brake.

I had one as a loaner and it really sucks. Takes up as much space as a normal stick without the ease of use.

I think I even prefer BMW’s weirdo-stick to this.

I’ve never seen that one before, its an interesting take on the idea though.

I think it was on higher trim Edsels in 58 only, but I could be wrong.

It looks like it takes up as much or more space than a conventional shifter...

That looks really cheap. Poor execution there, Acura.

I haven’t gotten a chance to try the BMW stick but its probably better than this. This and the Fusion’s rotary dial are awful.

(Kinja being kinja... I’m trying to upload this: this.

Hard to argue with this one, though. It actually moves to different detents (and stays there) as you select through PRNDM.

Didn’t MB get a lot of crap in the press/public opinion when that one first came out? That is amusing, considering the stupid other things coming out now.

Definitely, people howled about the column shift, especially in 09-10 when it appeared on the higher volume E-class. Either they are used to it now, or it really wasn’t such a bad idea to begin with.

I driven MB W212 for a few years now, and I like it. It frees up space in the console, and makes the car feel more open and larger. The car isn’t a racer, and has no real sporty pretense - no point trying to give it such with a floor shift. Nothing wrong with a column shift, it is honest.

What car is in that pic? Talk about a cryptic image at left on the column, I hope it is for hauling a trailer somehow.

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, that button is for turning on trailer mode. It holds gears longer, and softens up the shifts. The one that I used as my example is a 2014 Silverado, but pretty much any full-size GM truck and SUV is the same unit.

I would say that the only advantage of the old school method that seems to be only used by GM and Ram anymore, is that there is a positive movement for the lever between selections. The MB stick is more ambiguous, always returning to center if my memory is right. I didn’t have a problem driving them either... just the return to center is always counter-intuitive.

I wish people would get over themselves, and realize that the column is a perfect location for an automatic gear selector. You say the E Class is non-sporting... but legitimate trucks are transitioning to console shift. Not that is an unnecessary waste of space to look ... sporty?

That makes sense, in a truck. You are right about the movement on the MB shifter - it returns to center. I think it is something you get used to after a week or two, it is simple muscle memory for me now. As you are never really selecting gears other than going in and out park, reverse, or drive, there’s not much manual work going on. My only issue is that the park button takes a firmer push than the light movement needed to move the stalk into gear - so one may think they are in park, but aren’t.

An automatic truck with a floor shift is silly, but I guess in these days of fancy trucks used as family cars, a marketing type might want it there. Everything has to pretend to be sporty and exciting these days, even if it is anything but.

I suppose a big benefit of the MB method, over the more common nowadays T-handle in the console (Audi, FCA, etc) if the seperate park button. That makes a lot more sense, and may have been what was needed to save Anton Yelchin. I thought his death may have brought about more change to tradition than it did.

But either way, the MB system really is not hard to figure out or bad.

I’m sure it’s possible to adapt to the Acura system, too. But it sure feels like a case of “different to be trendy.”

I forgot about the Yelchin incident, that was tragic. I think I recall hearing MB incidents too, where the driver forgot to put it in park, or didn’t engage it properly - but at some point it becomes carelessness rather than the vehicle at fault. A couple times I have let off the brake thinking it was in park, but it wasn’t - now I press the button firmly and check. The level off resistance to select a gear is less than selecting park, that might throw people off.

I definitely believe the Acura system is different for the sake of different. Kind of like their styling. We all know how the beak was embraced, but they stubbornly stuck with it for almost a decade.
