So I am like 99% set on Buying the Dodge Neon I am looking at. However, the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger right away is that I have no idea if the timing belt has been done. Its at 160k miles so it would be a time bomb if it hasnt been done. Especially since I plan to autocross it. So I am trying to figure out how difficult it would be to replace the belt. It seems easy enough from tutorials but I have never worked on this motor at all so the little things will take time to do and figure out. Anyways for $1k I think its a good buy and the timing belt replacement should be cheap to do for sanity sake. Anything else I should be immediately replacing on a Neon with unknown history?

The seller didnt drive the car much at all, but planned to race it so he was going to change pretty much every part. Im only keeping it short term so I just want to make it not blow up and perhaps sell better later. So the easy stuff that would add value in a CL ad would be about all I want to do.

Ask the seller if the belt has been changed. If not, then fix it yourself

Change it. It’s an interference engine IIRC.

I sense that this will not be your DD, so you can take your time with the fix.

Change the badge so it’s a Neon Road & Travis

That’s a really nice car for $700, which is what $1100obo means to me. That would leave you $300 to get the belt done, which you should definitely do.

Thats the plan, im just trying to source the parts. It just sucks if it had been done and im doing it for no reason. This is why i like those stickers

Yeah it will be my daily but I can get it done in a day. It looks easier than it was on my Miata honestly. I want to autocross it too so I will just do it. It should make it easier to sell too.

Yeah he wont budge from $1k but thats still a fine price even with doing the timing belt. Its a solid as hell car otherwise. It seems easy enough to just do the belt.

Coolness, I hope it all checks out! I’ve always liked the first-gen Neons....despite all the crap Chrysler gets (my favorite family vehicle we ever had growing up was a ‘93 Caravan). Looking forward to hearing more about it! :)

Indeed, its got pretty favorable reviews out there and nothing is going to be the quality/price ratio I found there. I’m gonna want to buy tires for it but thats a minimal expense.

Yeah, I’d totally buy it for $1000. A buddy of mine had one in high school, surprised a lot of more powerful cars.

AutoX an ACR of similar vintage and it was a total blast. Front hubs might be in order if you plan to track it, but it should be good to go. Flush the coolant so you don’t overheat it. And flush the power steering fluid, and brakes as well, but the brakes are just for good measure. The power steering fluid may boil if it’s old when you auto x. All the sawing on the wheel. I used to throw the power steering belt every so often before I realized the fluid was past it.

Also try to change out the shifter bushings with poly ones, much improved shifting for a relatively easy swap.

Your the second person to suggest this so I’ll definitely try that out, especially since it’s gotta be easy.

It’s mostly gonna get daily driving so just the basic maintaining stuff. I doubt I’ll have time to track it before I move. But yeah all fluids will get changed either way. The guy replaced all of the brakes and suspension wear parts so it’s pretty solid feeling. But yeah both brake and clutch reservoirs were quite dark anyways inside.

Yeah, I’m getting the CTSV and neon shifters jumbled in my head, but I know the two bushings in the shifter linkages similar to a grommet were super easy to pop out and replace, but I think there were also bushings on the rods that were a bit of a bear, but that might have just been on the CTSV shifter. But no matter, it’s worth the hassle. I used the booger bushings, but not sure if those are still out there. I think I also swapped out to a short throw shifter, but that again may have been the CTSV. I’m thinking I left the stock shifter alone because after the bushings, it was all good. Definitely a super fun car, and cheap to work on, easyish too. I did put a homemade catch can on the pcv system, because I was getting oil coming out of the valve covers at times and the catch can did the trick. It was just a pvc tube with an inlet and outlet at different heights to separate the oil out, a cheap catch can would do the trick too, or maybe even a oil/water filter for an air compressor air line. It was the hose on the right side of the valve cover that went to the air intake side, I believe.

I’ve gotta solve the cooling problems first! Leaks from a few places and ran to 220 when I got home. But the fans work at least and it will cycle between 199 and 210 before running low on coolant. So it should be fixable.
