On one of the message boards of the news of Hyundai buying Chrysler/dodge /jeep /ram someone remarked that FCA is just as reliable as Hyundai.

I almost spat out my coffee, I drive a 12 year old Hyundai and while I don’t think it’s Toyota or Honda quality, I’d put it above a GM or Ford of equivalent age.

Is Hyundai quality a problem? I’ve never heard about anything making them below average.

We had to have a cracked part of our A/C unit fixed (used car, so it happens), but other than that, nothing major. I wouldn’t say an FCA vehicle is as reliable as a Hyundai from everything I’ve heard.

The only company FCA is just as reliable as is Land Rover.

I don’t think build quality has been an issue but they are learning how to build top tier cars on an accelerated pace, which means that each new generation represents large leaps in quality engineering and materials. Case in point an early 90's Hyundai was kinda crap, an early 2000's Hyundai was like earl 90's GM...reliable but mediocre. Current models are probably getting right up there to the top of the pack but historical analysis of their product is tough because its changed so rapidly.

According to Consumer Reports, this year Hyundai is better than Honda and waaaay better than FCA, but not as good as Toyota.

Go look at Consumer Reports’ ratings. I think it improved this year, but last year, the very *best* FCA product was rated as ‘average’. 90% of their vehicles were below average.

What djmt1 said is right. JLR is the only major auto manufacturer in the same league as FCA.

I would say that it is mostly a materials thing with hoondai. Thin metal, bad corrosion resistance, and tendency to under engineer things.

Aren’t those consumer ratings pretty much garbage? As in a phone not pairing instantly via bluetooth, or the UI being a little dumb being equal to waiting for a tow truck?

Well I frequently have 1-3 Sonatas and Santa Fes getting recall engines put in, but it takes 3-5 months to get a new engine.

X2.

I know people who have driven nothing BUT Hyundai cars for years. None of them have ever really had reliability issues. It’s always been cost cutting stuff. Corrosion, interior parts breaking, funky light bulb retention, seats are not the most comfortable, etc.

From a quality standpoint, I’d take a Hyundai/Kia 10/10 times over FCA.

Just think what a sweet vanity plate that would make if Hyundai made a hoonable car.

HOONDAI

Gen Coupe doesn’t count.

I mean a Veloster Turbo would probably make a pretty fun Rallycross car.

Fun and Veloster are mutually exclusive terms.

Reliability is pretty decent other than the whole massive engine replacement recall, but their material quality is a bit behind. My Mom’s $43k Azera has flimsier interior materials than my Fiesta, and I’m not bragging about the Fiesta’s quality interior, because it’s not. It also has significantly more squeaks and rattles, while having less miles.

I mean the DCT is terrible, but the 6MT version seems like it could be enjoyable in a low-traction environment.

My company van Ram Promaster is the worst thing I’ve ever experienced. Thousands and thousands of dollars in repairs. Left me stranded 4 times. Even on it’s best day I could pull it into a shop and rack up 3 grand. It’s a piece of junk FCA is bad.

I’ve owned a Fiat 500 and a Kia Optima, and hadn’t had mechanical problems with either. I have had about the same number of annoying fit and finish issues with both. I would put my Optima’s interior quality as about on par with a 5 year old domestic car TBH. Also, the Fiat’s doors felt way more substantial and heavier than the Optima’s. The Optima’s doors feel like they are made of tinfoil.

Dude you haven’t even been in one. Just because you have a FiST and worship it doesn’t mean you need to doodoo on its competitor at every opportunity. The Abarth is fun, the fist is fun, the Vel is fun. In the end theyre just 3 little fwd hatchbacks with a small displacement turbo. Differences are minute. Your FiST isn’t some Lotus and the others aren’t a Sebring.

I would put Hyundai reliability at the very top of the pack for 2011+cars.

I’ve completely beat on the two Hoondais I had so far and they were flawless.

Check out De Barge’s Hyundai Elantra video. 200k mile car, flawless.

But I have lol, it’s not even close. It’s incredibly dull. One of my FiST friends had one before, and cringes that he thought it was good.

The 6-speed itself isn’t bad. Everything else is bad. I would put the driving experience on par with an Aveo, but imagine less steering feel and a little less roll. It’s just a bit faster, but made that way with a very unexciting engine.

Driving-wise, it’s really on-par with the previous gen Scion tC. Fairly decent engine, generic econo-car bones, not much separating the steering from an Xbox 360 wheel, and it looks more interesting than it really is.

At my old job we had a fleet of Hyundai Accents and Toyota Yarii, and I’d say their reliability was on par. They all had issues, since they were beat on relentlessly by everyone but me and another couple drivers, but nothing super unusual. The most notable death of one of the ‘09 Accents was when the timing snapped, but that was because they didn’t change it when they should’ve. Actually, the oldest and most impressive car was an ‘06 or so Accent, with at least 450k kms on it

We have owned 4 Hyundai’s and while they were all extremly reliable and didn’t need much maintanence the quality still feels behind, it’s just not as nice as a Japanese or European car, Japanese cars are still more reliable/better engineered and European cars just feel nicer although less reliable.

I would actually compare current Korean cars with USDM cars, average reliability and engineering, at least in the entry-mid size segment.

I have to agree there, they nailed reliability and costs but kinda B- on everything else. Nothing to be a deal breaker but definitely not the best

They’ve improved a lot because, with those super long warranties they had to, it was either improve reliability or shell out a ton of cash in covered repairs.
