If you push the lock button or knob before you exit your car, you deserve to be locked out.

Just had a friend text me that he locked himself out of his car because he likes to press the knob on the door down instead of using the key. So after grinding into him about how he deserves it for being lazy, I try to help him over the phone and go figure, he doesn’t even know the number for his insurance. So now he’s sitting there, 11:30 at night staring at the keys in his seat. I probably sound very stupid but this exact thing makes me angry because it’s so easy to avoid and still happens to so many people. Amazing how saving two seconds of your life can end up costing you hours. And yes, I get irrationally angry about things, but only very specific things like this.

IF ONLY THERE WERE A BUTTON ON A DEVICE OR A KEY-OPERATED MECHANISM THAT ALLOWED ONE TO LOCK DOORS EXTERNALLY...

But seriously, the only time I’ve done that is in my dad ‘85 Toyota with manual EVERYTHING. There’s no reason to do it in anything with a remote or if you even have the keys, really.

The only way I can lock my car is with the key from the outside so cannot ever get into this position

Shit happens. I’ve locked myself out of my car at least 6 times in my life, 4 times used a coat hanger, two times had to get a tow guy to pop the door.... It’s been about four years since I last did it, probably related to owning cars with key fobs I suspect.

Yet my 1978 VW Scirocco won’t let you push the knob down unless you’re locking yourself in? It forces you to use the key.

1978.

What’s homeboy locking himself out of exactly?

Damn. I’ve been locked out of a lot of vehicles. I’ve learned how to break into most of them too because of that.

I have locked my keys in a car one time. Never happened again.

The driver’s door lock actuator in my car is broken in such a way that half the time it doesn’t respond to the remote, so yeah, I open the door and then manually lock it before locking the rest of the car with the remote sometimes.

As you point out, the prudent thing is to use the fob to lock the car, ensuring that the keys aren’t inside. I will say that in the past I used the door lock on my way out in an effort to save battery life on the fob, but it probably had no real benefit given the risk. Of course, this was with a vehicle where I actually had the keys out of my pocket to turn an ignition.

Now I have a car with the touch lock on the outside door handle which also won’t let me lock the keys inside, best of both worlds since I don’t have to take the keys out of my pocket ever, which would just be TOO MUCH EFFORT.

My friend’s ‘87 GTI had the same system and he managed to lock himself out, believe it or not. He was very good about doing stupid things that nobody thought possible, at least not anyone with an iota of foresight. He went in through the passenger door to show off his new stereo and exited the same door, pushing the lock button as he did. Thankfully he only lived a couple of miles away so getting the spare key wasn’t a major issue.

My Avalon does not have a exterior release. So about twice I was getting something from my trunk put my keys down and then, closed it without taking my keys out making it a whole process to get the spare.

Yeah, that works. Although I have to admit, with all these hacker stories popping up, I think I prefer to avoid broadcasting my fob signal while walking away from the car.

On my Benz it was the same way. Once I had put my duffel bag in the trunk, I closed the trunk and it popped open immediately. I shut it again and again it popped open and I’m like WTF is wrong with the trunk?!

Turns out the key was in my duffel and the car was gently reminding me that I am an idiot by saving me not once but twice from locking them in the trunk.

I locked myself out of my car the other day and you’re 100% correct, I earned that inconvenience.

My car has 191k and my key is brand new, it doesn’t work great in the door so I lock it from the inside before I hop out. I could have locked it from the outside, but I was lazy.

Aside from locking the doors and crawling out of the hatchback that’s the next best way to do it!

My 85 RX7 unlocks the door when it shuts, so it is not physically possible to do that. It’s kind of a pain sometimes but at least it keeps this from happening

i developed a dumb sytem a while back. i put all of my door keys on one key ring, and all of my ignition keys are either on my other ring, or setting inside whatever beater they go to. that way, it is a whole lot harder to lock both the door and ignition key inside at the same time......

My wife’s Durango has the button right where I put my hand to get out. Luckily it’s push button ignition so the fob will always be in my pocket

But yes, if you don’t have them in your hand, you deserve to be gang raped in a Burger King bathroom by the Humpty Hump.
