...but it’s definitely not the most beautiful road in America. I’d probably rank it 3rd in the state. These are from the Richardson Highway on the way to Valdez today

I feel like people don’t mention enough how pretty Alaska is as a state, especially in the south coast of the mainland and the panhandle. In fact, that entire coastline all the way down to Washington is all prime scenery.

It’s like New Zealand without all the hobbits. Rainy, mountainous, and vast.

It’s unbelievable. Seeing the color change in this beautiful setting has been quite the treat. I’ve seen my fair share of the US but Alaska truly is a world apart.

It truly is spectacular. And not the frozen tundra most people expect, either.

I’ve been there once, and we put 1800 miles on a rental Subie in 8 days.

If there’s a road that’s NOT scenic in Alaska, we didn’t find it.

The only real frozen tundra part of Alaska is the northern coast. The rest is all mountains and rainforest.

Nice. I’m gonna have to sit down at the end of this and figure out how many miles I’ve done in AK over the last month or so, but it’s a lot. And yea, some are more scenic than others but just about everywhere I’ve been has been gorgeous.

Yeah - I flew to Anchorage in June and we just drove around - so we were only in the south central part other than a trip up toward Denali.

So much of it felt like subtropical rainforest.

Will do! I’ve done a couple posts about Alaska so far, I’ll probably have two more about Alaska specifically before I’m done

Ah! I’ve got to go back and read those. I missed the first one, then was too busy to read through the 2nd when I first saw it-

It’s easy to go on and on about Alaska. And long reads are good too!

For somebody who writes some long pieces I usually don’t have the patience to sit down and read them lol

Put 1,800 miles on a rental when we went, only to find that we haven’t even discovered 1/8 of Alaska

Isn’t that the truth. I’ve been trying to emphasize to people how inaccessible most of Alaska is by car. They don’t seem to understand what I mean when I say parts are “not on the road system.” Like entire towns (or state capitals...) only being accessible by boat or air.

I still don’t get why they thought no roads to Juneau was a good idea. Yet, it’s still a cool city

I don’t either. I was only there for a day and most of it was spent checking out Mendenhall glacier and at the library. Thinking about hitting it on the way back but we’ll see which way the wind blows.
