The Vietnam War , A 10 part, 18 hour in depth look at the war in Vietnam. To make things even better, there is an explicit version in addition to the broadcast version. RIP my weekend.

It definitely is.

(As with all things Ken Burns does, it’s a damn good everything.)

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.

The WaPo has an interesting piece titled,

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick directed ‘The Vietnam War’ together. Why is only one of them famous?

The “Vietnam War” co-director has been making movies with Ken Burns for decades. Why is only one of them famous?

Contrary to the implication of the subtitle, it’s not a piece about a woman struggling for recognition in a man’s world. It’s about Novick and her role in the Vietnam War project, how she came to work with Burns, and where she goes from here. It’s a good read.

Been watching this. I feel like this is not something you watch for fun or entertainment it’s something you watch to learn and to feel. Its something you watch to become a better person and confirm things to yourself and honor those wounded or died.

I’m not trying to be a dick, it’s just that Burns gets all the credit, which is certainly well deserved, but he was only half of this project. Novick deserves credit too. Not only did she do all the interviews, but she was instrumental in making sure that Vietnamese soldiers and civilians were interviewed, not just Americans.

Oh, I didn’t take it that way at all, people deserve credit where it’s due.

I enjoy a really good documentary more than just about anything else. I grew up watching PBS and NOVA, Nature, and Frontline are my favorite shows to this day.

I also find our changing perspective on Vietnam to be fascinating as we put behind so much of the rhetoric and see the realities of a brutal war.

I’ve been trying to watch this at night. Yes the explicit version. I made it 40min into #2 last night before I had to call it. I didn’t realize they’d be an hour and a half EACH.

But yeah, can’t wait to pick it back up.

Very well said. I also was little kid growing up loved watching nova and other documentaries and tons of cooking shows. Its really good to watch the vietnam documentary and either confirm past opinions or learn new perspectives and dispel stereotypes or opinions. I think anyone watching it would see the reality of the war no matter which side of it one is on and come to the conlusion war is hell and we should ask more questions and ask ourselves how commited we are to be involved and ask our young men to die.
