Kinja'd!!!

I’m not the rabid Apple fanboy that I used to be. I think they’ve lost a step over the last few years while the competition has been getting better. A MacBook wasn’t the instant decision it was last time I needed a new laptop. But I did it anyway, and dang these color matched gold stickers are a neat detail. Also, the “About This Mac” shows a gold MacBook icon shows someone was paying attention. Anyway, I assume some of you guys want a mini-review or impressions post of this thing soon?

I believe the MacBook is the only model which gives you color matched stickers. The Pros don’t and neither does the iPhone.

Also, I can’t tell you how much I hate the new MacBook keyboards.

Yeah the iPhones are all still white I believe. They really should color match the X just to give you something for that price tag. I’m not hating this keyboard anywhere near as much as I expected too, especially with a Cherry MX Brown sitting on my desk. It does seem improved from the 2015 and 2016 models, but obviously there is only so much that you can do with so little travel.

Do you have something to compare the keyboard to? I’m curious if you liked them previously and they really dropped off in quality or something. I have a 2013 13" Air and I really like the keyboard. It feels pretty much the same as the Pros from the same era. However, the 4GB of RAM really sucks and I’m gonna have to replace it eventually.

I don’t really need a mini-review, actually.

Thanks though!

However I will say I love my 15" Mid-2012, modded with 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD

The new keyboards have basically 0 travel and feel like typing directly on a table. It’s an entirely new design introduced on the 2015 Macbook and now on the 2016 pro. It’s not that they are bad quality but they just don’t feel good to type on because of the super low travel.

I would. I’m still rocking my late 2008 MacBook. I’m marginally in the market for a new laptop, but I just bought $4,500 worth of trumpets, so a laptop might have to wait a while.

2012? Such a new machine - I’m a little jealous (says the guy still rocking an early 2008 w/ 4GB and a 240GB SSD connected externally...)

I limped a 2007 iMac until just a few months ago with a CPU transplant, RAM max out, SSD inside and FW800 storage drive outside added over the years before replacing it with a 2017 iMac. It was running 10.10 and honestly it was tolerable still most of the time but the microphone died and it was my main FaceTime machine so I upgraded. It’s my daughters now, replacing an iBook G4.

Hah well I wasn’t going to give you one anyway! The 2011-2013 era machines were so good they kinda put Apple in a bind. Plenty of people are still holding on to them and they are working great. So I think they switched gears to the thinner lighter thing figuring even if they still sold an upgradable machine people already had them. I also think Apple got sold a bill of goods by both Intel and the memory manufacturers... I’m guessing they expected to have 4-core chips with TDP’s for the 13” Pro and 6-8 cores in the 15” with up to 64 GB of RAM. It’s going to be interesting to see how the iMac Pro is received. If it does really well I’d expect Apple to bring back a more upgradable laptop. Maybe something like a “MacBook Plus” like the iPhone pluses that is a bit thicker allowing for mor key travel and RAM sockets for those that want it. But I’m probably just dreaming.

Yeah.... just dreaming indeed... I even don’t like that in 2013, some stuff was harder to upgrade (like built-in RAM to the logic board)

Yeah. One thing I’ve noticed about Apple laptops in the last few years that sort of offsets it in my mind - they hold their value like crazy. I know people who “upgrade” just by selling a their 3-4 year old MacBook and buying a 1-2 year old one for not too much more than upgrading the components would be. Of course that’s not really the same because it is a time sink and mileage varies. One big reason I sprung for a 27” iMac is just to upgrade my RAM on my own. Oddly the 2017 iMac has gone back to socketed RAM from soldered... but the case required cutting glue to open. I miss the magnets on the older ones.

Please don’t stick this to the back of your car.
Everytime I see one of these, I wanna ram the car, just because. Especially if it’s some junker.

Nah. I’ve got around a dozen of these things in a drawer from various iPhones and Macs over the years and none of them have made it onto a car. I’m admittedly a fanboy - I love Apple stuff, but I don’t like the look of plastering their logo on stuff. The only thing worse are Oakley stickers on cars because they cost extra. (I used to be a huge Oakley defender when they made all their subglasses in the USA but that’s a discussion for another time.). The gold stickers are neat though. I might stick one on my guitar case or something like that.
