Your first car, how much was it?

There was a thread about how much is too much for a first car. So now I pose the question: what was your first car and how much was it? Without shame, mine was a 1994 Chevy Cavalier that was $250 but I had to provide my own Bars Leak Head Gasket Sealant. Image not my personal car (I don’t think I have one) but of a VERY similar car:

Mine was a 97 Jetta GLS in ~2006, I paid 1500 dollars for it, it had 86k miles and was in almost perfect condition, the previous owner was a neat-freak. Used it through most of college, the transmission started slipping at 110k miles (it was an auto). I traded it in for $300.

$3000 Lexus LS400. It was sweeeeet. I feel like if I had a kid, I’d buy his/her first car around $3000. Just low enough to fully be depreciated but enough to be reliable and not strand or be a money pit.

I bought a tank of gas and got a conversion van for free!

I worked as an oil changer and bought a conversion van off a guy moving across the country the next day. It had bad overheating issues and some interior electrics were failing. I bought it and replaced the radiator, water pump, some hoses, and I think a gasket? Been a while. But I paid 75$ for it and it came with a full 20 gallon tank when gas was 4$ a gallon. I guess at the end of the day it was more like 400$ after parts. But still, hot damn!

1977 Firebird Esprit 305 V8.

It was my aunt’s first car, she bought it in the early 80's, used, and parked it when she had kids in the early 90's. In the late 90's I paid her installments to eventually equal $1500 for the car plus the parts to fix it (EGR, gaskets, etc) then stuck another couple hundred for shocks and a y-pipe cause it sat for a long time and rotted off. Sounded neat though.

I paid $900 for a 1999 Honda civic that only had 119k miles on it and didn’t start. Turns out it was just out of gas! And it was super dirty, like covered in mud and garbage inside. But after a thorough cleaning with bleach and some basic deferred maintenance, it ran reliably and happily for 5 years and 65k miles. Then I sold it to someone for $1350 once I bought my Miata. So overall it was a great experience. I experienced many maintenance adventures but it was a good learning experience.

Mine was a 1988 VW Fox 4 speed wagon (sadly, I have no pictures of it, except from my wedding day). I don’t remember exactly how much it cost, maybe $12k. My father purchased it for me the summer before I left for graduate school, and I paid him back over the next five years. I think I paid about $150/month. If I found one in good shape I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

It was “free”. Sure, it didn’t have an operational engine and had been sitting for a couple of years. And was puke green. Once you figure in a junkyard engine and a bunch of assorted parts you’re pretty close to $500. Of course that was in 1982 dollars.

My ’89 Suburban was a direct hand-me-down from my parents. I loved it so much that my next car (the first one I bought with my own money) was nearly identical, but in better shape. I dropped $3000 on it.

I say “identical”, but that was largely due to the body style and color. In truth, it was an upgrade from R1500 to V2500, which means that I also went from 2WD to 4WD. It had a whole lot less rust, and the barn doors actually worked without a chain holding them shut. It had rear AC, too.

v8, granny4 speed, manual brakes, manual steering, disc brakes. longbed stepside.

the engine was a 307 that someone had at some point subbed in. it had a broken bolt in the head, that let the water drain out the bolt hole. it had 3 dead lobes on the camshaft, the carb was junk, and the gas tank in the cab leaked out the gas almost as fast as you could pour it in.

Should have been $21k out the door (they’d agreed to it) but I was an idiot and bought the third-party extended warranty (goodby mod money). Dropped it all in one go because payments can go fuck themselves.

^The answer to your question is up there. I ended up going for a ramble...

I’d been looking for about 3 years at cheap (>$6000) trucks. I wanted (and still do, if I’m honest) a gen-1 S10. Could never find the configuration I wanted. So I turned to the ‘99-‘06 Sierra... another truck I’ve always liked. They were largely rust heaps with the wrong engine. Shortly before I bought this I realized a couple things:

- That brand new would cost the same in insurance as 10-15 years old. Ontario is weird.

- Anything in that price range around here either needs or will need rockers and cab corners. $$

- I’ve been looking so long I can actually afford something newer now.

So I started looking at GMT900's... then this thing pops up and OH SHIT I’VE WANTED ONE OF THOSE SINCE THE DAY IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WERE GOING TO BE A THING aaaaaaand a couple days later I’d signed the papers on it.

It’s coming up 3 years now. It’s full of weird noises because GM interior and small almost forgotten by it’s makers vehicle and had zero effort put in to making thing FIT TOGETHER WITHOUT SQUEAKING and blah blah blah... Sometimes it drives me nuts. Sometimes it’s just meh. But most of the time I love the wheels off it. It has a definite character and it’s awesome.

When I bought it I think I planned to drive it for a couple years and trade up to a new one. I no longer have any intention of doing that. I have no plans whatsoever to get rid of it. This truck is an absolute keeper.
