So someone in my grade just turned 16, and they ordered a 60,000 dollar car. Specifically, a bmw 440i. Is this to much money for a 16 year old? Is this totally unreasonable? Should they have gotten a used car for like 10,000? I’m gassed that they got a 60,000 dollar car

IMHO, $10k is too much for a teenager’s first car.

I’m 31, I’ve been driving for 15 years, and I’ve purchased a total of 6 cars. If you add up the prices of all 6 cars, it’s still less than $20,000. Nobody needs a $60,000 car, especially not a teenager. Even $10,000 for a first car is a lot.

I think we have it screwed up on who we buy the newer cars for, frankly. The car with the better safety and driver alerts should be for the newer driver. Instead we give high-risk drivers older, less safe cars and then are surprised when they die or seriously hurt themselves and others. We know they are likely to have an accident so we give them older cars to have those dents in, not thinking that since we know they will have an accident we should try to protect them as much as we can and trust our driving ability to keep us rubber-side down with clean paint.

If I had the money my kid would be in the most nannied-up car i could buy.

Question is, how long before they crash it.

Yes, they should have gotten a $5k car. You can hoon a $5k car and learn how to drive. that 440i, if they ever try and approach the limits, they’ll crash it and never learn how to handle it.

I’ve always been mixed on this. When I was younger, I had my own car I paid for. It was shitty, beat up, but it was mine. Others had cars bought for them...they treated it like shit, never washed it, it was worth 10x my car, and alot of times they wrecked it driving like an idiot.

Did they learn a lesson? Some did...others died...and some got a new car the next week.

When I was 32 I bought my first brand new car. I was 26 before I had AC in my car. My car is like the old horse in the barn who is happy to see me and we go off on adventures together. It is mine...no one drives it but me..and I love it everyday.

I generally learned later that some folks see cars as status symbols or tools instead of it being a toy or hobby. They didn’t care and neither should you.

Teenagers do dumb things. I did. All of my friends did. All of my nieces and nephews, etc. Buying a newer vehicle won’t prevent stupid stuff from happening to their car, it just ensures that it’ll be more expensive to fix it when something stupid does happen. Get something old that doesn’t cause a world of pain when it gets in its first fender bender. And it isn’t always their fault. The worst thing that can happen to a teenagers car is other teenagers. My niece was just telling me about someone parking in the senior lot that wasn’t allowed. After other students apparently “warned” her by first spitting all over her car, then smearing food all over it, they then keyed it.

I’d cap a teen budget at $5k, but would try to find something between 2-3K. When my son is old enough to drive, he won’t have his own car. I’ll have a second car in my name he’s allowed to use, but it won’t be his. Even my current truck at 10 years old will be worth too much for me to “give” to him.

b) Are they a spoiled turd because mommy and daddy have money, or are they a decent human being?

If the answer to (a) is yes and (b) is the latter, it’s not too much money. Financially speaking anyway.

Without knowing them I can draw no other conclusion. I’ve known kids who were maniacs from day 1, and some who were always sedate and responsible. For my part I was practically bipolar.

I think it’s a little excessive both in power and in price. I remember how I was when I first started driving, and if I had something with that kind of power and cool factor I would’ve gotten into a lot of trouble.

HOWEVER. This does not mean that this particular 16 year old does not deserve the car. If parents want to buy their kid something nice, why not? It really chafes me when I hear this weird working class elitism that goes “you don’t deserve that [insert nice thing here], you didn’t work for it, you only have that because mommy and daddy bought it for you”. Its just pure envy that drives that line of thought.

That difference is getting smaller and smaller now, though. A 15 year old car today has pretty decent safety features compared to say, a 15 year old vehicle when I was a kid (heck, even compared to NEW vehicles when I was a kid). When my kid is old enough to drive, I’d say a 2010 vehicle would be considered fairly safe.

With that in mind, comparing Ontario to other places that have cheaper insurance... you could own a fairly pricey vehicle in a few years just out of the insurance savings.

Example. At 17 it would have cost me $8,000 a year to insure an ‘03 Sierra. A freaking ‘99 Cavalier would cost $10,000. Age of the vehicle didn’t seem to make much difference, a 2014 Silverado would ding me for the same amount. For shits and giggles I looked up my rates in Manitoba... Eleven. Hundred. Dollars. $6,900 less. And rates in large chunks of the US are even lower. But sticking with Manitoba, in 5 years you could have paid off $34,500 worth of vehicle. And at the end of it you have a newer vehicle that’s worth more. So why not stretch a little?*

*Besides the obvious reason that cars are money pits and you can save a LOT of cash when you don’t have to run a car

Depends on who you ask.

The most anyone in my family has ever spent on a car is $28K for a 3-year-old CPO Lincoln that stickered for around $52K new, which is my middle-aged mother’s daily. I don’t know this for certain, but I’m pretty sure that’s about $15K more than any car any of us have ever owned. I’ve personally never owned a car worth more than $5K and my first two cars cost less than that combined. All that to say, from my perspective a $60K car for anyone seems excessive, for a 16-year-old it seems absurd.

But there are people out there for whom $60K is an insignificant amount of money. I doubt they really care what I think of how they spend their money and I’m not sure they should care what I think anyway.

Who cares what people’s parents spend on their first car. Some people are more well off. My parents were pretty well off and they got me a new Corolla, it was close to $18k, I kept it for 10 years through college and for my first few jobs.

2nd paragraph: YES

The question shouldn’t be “was that too much to spend on a car for a 16 year old”, it should be “is that too much CAR to give a 16 year old”. It’s only too much money if you can’t afford it. I may think it’s a foolish use of the money, but that’s not my problem.

That said people that are clearly spoiled and feel entitled to everything piss me off and I’d sooner see them driving a garbage truck. But if they’re a decent human being? (NEWSFLASH: having nice things for free doesn’t make you an asshole) Who the hell cares?

Not saying it’s not, but driver assistance packages are only starting to trickle out in the grand scheme of cars in the marketplace. That means it still is on the early-adopter (read luxury) vehicles on the used market, so you’d be, in theory buying a more expensive car either in price or in upkeep if you wanted those features.

Safety cage and structure I totally agree, but in terms of software and complete-VSC systems, 15 years is ancient.

Completely unreasonable.

You know, I can understand a parent buying their kid a brand new car if they can afford it. They’re getting the latest safety features, they know it will be worry free for as long as the parents have to worry about it, it’s an easier buying process. Actually, the nicest car I’ve ever been the primary driver of was my first car. It wasn’t new, it was a 2005 Volvo S40 but that was only like a 5 year old car at the time. My parents have done well for themselves so they could afford a third car and were tired of driving me to swim practice at 5 in the morning, but put a very high priority on safety and wouldn’t let me buy one of the shitheaps I was eyeing up on Craigslist(I had yet to discover Jalopnik/Oppo but I have always been an Opponaut at heart). So we went to the local Volvo dealership(my life is a meme, upper middle class suburban kid turns 16, gets his drivers license, Mom takes him firmly by the hand and drags him to the Volvo dealership) and checked out their used stuff. Wound up with the S40 which was quite a nice little car all things considered(and suspiciously the cheapest thing we saw with side-curtain airbags), I would probably still have it if it had a stick because it did/would make quite a nice daily and would certainly still have it if it had a stick and was the wagon version. But instead once I was older(20), had some money saved and my parents trusted me to not kill myself I told my parents I appreciated the Volvo, but they could sell it and I went and bought my E36.

But back to the point, get the kid like a Honda or a Toyota or a Subaru or a Kia or something(or a lightly used Volvo!) cheap, functional and reliable. Nobody needs a luxury car, it’s something nice you get for yourself once you’ve earned it. The kid hasn’t earned that yet and shouldn’t be getting accustomed to this stuff at 16. If it MUST be a BMW for some insane brand-loyalty reason get them a 320 or something or if dad likes all his cars to be German this is precisely who the Jetta is for.

Trust fund kids that have parents that aren’t stupid don’t get fancy cars. I am what you’d consider a “trust fund kid” and my mom bought me a $19,000 golf, and only bought new because it had some safety features she liked. I know a kid who got a Maserati granturismo for his first car, hit, of all things, a bear with it, and got another granturismo. Of course, it turned out that his dad was stealing a few million from his workplace to do this stuff (due to political connections, he got out of prison after a month) , but the kid drives at 100 mph through town and will eventually hurt someone badly.

I got a golf Wolfsburg 5 speed manual for 19k, courtesy of my mom. Perfect first car IMO. My dad wanted me to get an E46 or E90 wagon, but good luck finding one with a stick like they insisted.

More. I was quoted $6,000 a year at 16 to be a primary driver on an ‘88 Chevy van. That I didn’t own.

You want a car? Small car? Less than 20 years old? That’ll be $10k please.

I had to buy myself a $3000 car when I was 18 with my own money. So yes, his insurance must be rediculous.

Even if I was massively rich, I may get my kid a new honda at best.

As an owner of a 540i several times over, I can tell you point blank it’s too much power for a first car. It’s electronically limited to 155 mph and it’ll get there without any struggle.

At least it has a ton of nannies and safety gear and crumples like tinfoil while teaching you all about understeer at the same time.

If they can afford the car they can afford some HPDE days at a local track. Cars don’t behave the same at speed as they do while going slowly. Hopefully they learn this safely.

Where in the GTA are we talking? Actual city of Toronto, or Mississauga/Oakville/Markham etc?

That’s shockingly reasonable. I paid $6,000 my first year with my truck (19) because I knew the odds of finding another like it were pretty slim.

Markham, clean G license, traffic course taken, for either a 1st-gen Sienna (a different one than mine) or Mazda 6 Wagon.

I presume it has something to do with the relative uncommonness of both of them. My mom is an insurance broker, so she pulls up numbers for many different companies.

The S40 was a perfect first car in a lot of ways, it was interesting and fun enough that as a budding car enthusiast I was reasonably happy with it but mom and dad didn’t have to worry about it tempting me into doing anything stupid and being a very safe place to be when I inevitably tempted myself into doing something stupid(Though I didn’t put a single scratch on that car all four years I drove it).

We ended up selling it to another 16-year-old kid who had just gotten his driver’s license which felt very good.

My parents offered to get me a brand new IS back when I was 16 and in high school and I was routinely looking at $40k used ISFs (back in 2010). But we never went through with it because the TL my dad handed down to me was still working fine and was more than fast enough for me.

7 years and another hand me down car from my parents later (this time my mom’s GX) I look back at that and I’m like THE HECK WERE WE THINKING.

Eh, $2500 just got my son an ‘02 Escape with 140k miles. Runs good, clean title, decent service history.

I personally could care less what people’s parents spend on their first car, as long as I’m not that parent. I’d rather my son learns the value of money, and to appreciate what he has.

I’ve also seen a countless number of remorseless teenagers trash gifts from mommy and daddy, multiple times in a year. That actually played into selecting a location for my current shop (I’m about equidistant from the two largest and affluent high schools in my area). You may have kept your Corolla for ten years, but I’ve seen dozens of cars ruined through neglect and carelessness.

If money were no option, I may spend 10k. At most I wouldn’t want them stranded somewhere unsafe and you want good crash safety, 10k is a plenty reasonable budget for both those things.

Yup, you’re right about that. They ARE .

Trust me I used to get bitter about this kind of stuff all the time. But then I realized I was irrationally hating people I didn’t know based on their car. I had no idea what their circumstances were, so I just let it go.

However, I haven’t had the chance to be completely screwed over by economic situations beyond my control manipulated by the greed of the untouchable. So I totally understand that I can’t comprehend what it really feels like to see a benefactor of the same system that screwed me over strutting around flaunting it.

That last sentence is the crux of the issue, you’re the one buying the car, there’s your problem. Make the kid pay for it, or a good chunk of it so they have some skin in the game. You can still find some nicer, safer cars out there.

No - I like the Car Guys’ advice - the biggest ugliest Volvo sedan you can find (used, of course). Safe, and difficult to get into trouble. A 440i is too much car, way too soon. And, like you, I bought myself a $1,200 car when I was 18. Believe it or not, a Volvo.

Don’t take it personal. I work with a man who’s nearing his 50's yet he always gets his parents to buy him a brand new car. Usually people like the kid you mentioned who has a granturismo and speeds and drives crazy won’t appreciate what they own be it a car or anything else unless they had to pay for it and take care of it themselves.

Yes, that’s completely unreasonable, if only because it sets the kid up for failure. One possibility is that they will grow into a rational adult despite their parents’ best efforts, in which case it will be hard not to be crushed when they get out of school and look for a job and realize just how hard it is to actually earn the lifestyle they’re accustomed to. The other possibility is that they never develop any perspective at all—in part because of things like being handed a car nicer than 99.9 percent of the world will ever drive the day they got their license—they’ll just be an entitled dipshit for the rest of their life, be incapable of understanding why no one loves them, and blame everyone else for their unhappiness.
