there’s only so much room in a house, hard to do garagey car type stuff when the garage is full or basementy storagey type things

Are you doing your own framing/electrical? My wife and I have talked about finishing our basement, but have said no thanks to the $50-60k estimates to basically add a bedroom/bathroom and one large open area.

one bedroom, one bathroom, one unfinished storage area, and a large open area in ours, and yeah bids were topping out in the $50k range! nutso!

negative, I am doing a combo of paying for work and doing some of my own. The basement and some renovations and new floors upstairs are likely going to be in the $30k (+much sweat) range when completed.

I know you’re local, if it all works out in the end I’ll throw in a reference to the folks doing the work.

That would be awesome. Thanks. It sounds like you’re doing something really similar to what we would want to do. We really don’t want a legal bedroom, as that’ll mess up the large open area because of the window placement. We’ll have more of a TV room/lounge type area.

Did you have someone design it, or were you able to come up with your own design? That’s what I’m struggling with the most, although I think I have it figured out, for the most part.

we came up with our own design. Then cleared out the basement completely and laid out the design in blue tape.

we had to have someone actually draw up the design though and in the end the arrangement of shower/sink/toilet in the bathroom had to be shuffled around to fit code on clearances in front of items (apparently humans have legs and those need space in front of a toilet) and the drawings including plumbing and electrical had to be approved by the county. It wasn’t anything complex, but they needed a basic drawing to approve the permit.
