Malaise - they’ll certainly ride a lot better!! I grew up with those cars, so it’s a bit of nostalgia for me, even though I’m not a huge fan.

The E38 and SL above are reasonably tasteful, though - another inch or so upward, and I’d rock either one.

Nice, don’t see many Mark Vs in that color.

Not a stance fan, I’ll take malaise excess.

Malaise is better. Bad cars need love too. Stance is more like good cars getting bad love.

I never thought malaise would be preferable to anything, but you found it. Exposed fasteners everywhere, ill-fitting/aligned body panels, mushy handling (but great ride), etc, is bad, but stance is much worse. At least the malaise sleds can be driven safely on public streets.

What’s the better thing to get into? For me it’s neither. But if I had to pick, I suppose I’d roll around in a convertible malaise era land barge.

If I could unstance the Jag, I’d be pretty happy with that too. Somewhat smaller wheels in a different color.

One of my bucket list cars is a 70's Caprice Classic convertible, with a 454. I knew a guy who had one in the family in HS (triple white!), and it was sweet.

There isn’t a better thing to be into. That’s the beauty of the hobby. Some people really like stanced luxury, some like malaise era land yachts, some like bro trucks, some like old Japanese cars, etc. The only universal truth is that the person who talks shit about what another likes, just because it’s different from what they like, is an asshole.

Malaise era cars are really underrated, especially as a project car.

They’re a class above the 60s cars in terms of tech (actual power disc brakes and coil spring rear suspensions), stupidly easy to work on and improve, and cheap as heck to buy and modify. Plus you’ll never lose your car in the parking lot.

They are a bit on the heavy side, but not every car in your fleet has to be a sports car.

Stance doesn’t appeal to me at all. I’d take a G body, I like em. Drop me back into the barges of malaise, well, I’d still take those over a stanced ride.

Kinja'd!!! "CobraJoe" (cobrajoe)
09/21/2017 at 10:54, STARS: 0

Malaise era cars need more love around here.

Sure, they’re big, heavy, underpowered, and softly sprung. But they’re also extremely cheap, easy to work on, easy to upgrade, built like a truck, and will turn heads even in “straight out of the barn” condition (if they’re not banged up).

As long as you can acknowledge that they’ll never be a sports car or handle like a CTS-V, you can have 2 tons of fun for cheap. (Seriously cheap. There’s a great condition ‘74 Lincoln Continental on my local CL for $1500).

Back to topic:

Stanced luxury cars are basically ruined versions of nice cars.

And if all 1972-1996 cars worldwide were malaise, then I’d happily choose them - the 80s were easily my favourite decade for cars. But assuming that the term only applies to American cars (because seriously, the Ferrari F40 isn’t what you’d call malaise)…

…Then yeah, I’d still go for ‘malaise’ American cars.
