I sincerely hope that they restore this aircraft to its former glory and put it in a museum somewhere.

In a box around here somewhere I still have my old personalized plates that match the reg on this aircraft, N757A, as well as a frame picked up at the museum of flight that reads “My other vehicle is a Boeing 757". Yeah, I’m a little biased...

I know that one well having seen it at the Continental hangar over at LAX on numerous occasions. Between this one and all of the automotive prototypes and race cars over at the Imperial Cargo Complex, there were some great things about working on the ramp. Too bad I didn’t have a camera phone back in those days...

Here’s a hint: that’s not a B-29.

Clearly some kind of test bed. Is that a B-50 that has been converted?

Nope. Not a B-50. Here’s a big hint: it’s not American.

Not American makes it a Tu-4. What I don’t get is the cabin / cockpit on the inboard nacelle.

It’s a pretty recherché question, and I only happened to stumble upon it when looking for photos for the turboprop B-17 post I made earlier today. Yes, it’s a Tu-4, and the crazy thing attached to the wing is the forward fuselage and engine of the Tu-91 , a prototype naval attack aircraft that was under development at a time when Stalin envisioned huge fleets of aircraft carriers. When Stalin died, and the carriers were canceled, the Tu-91 got canceled along with them.

You’ll appreciate this modelers thread I ran across. Someone went through the trouble of putting together a model of the Tu-4 test aircraft by grafting a couple models together.

I saw that photo, but didn’t dig into it. Those are some skills I wish I had. That’s really well done. However, how could you be sure it’s a Tu-4 and not a B-29? When the Russians copied the B-29, they did it rivet for rivet, all the way down to copying the “Boeing” on the rudder pedals.

Edit: I clicked on your link and saw that he started with a B-29.
