I was walking the dog today and heard coming up behind me a distinctive whine. I said to the dog: “that’s a Ford power steering pump”, and of course I was right. It was at 12 year old Ford Escape. Possibly I just know that noise because my mother drove one of these during my formative years:

Kinja'd!!!

What other distinctive non-exhaust note noise could you identify makes or models by?

The engine fan of a GMT-400 Chevy truck.

Nissan starter motors. The one in my Frontier had & Juke sound very similar.

Also on the MR16DDT the cam shafts make a distinctive whine becausese ofthe coating on them. So Jukes & turbo Sentras are easy to ID. At low RPMs you hear little high-pitched noise, that the cam shafts. At high rpm it can me mistaken for the turbo.

Honda starters (on I-4 cars at least) seem to have a very distinctive sound too.

Same for V6. I can always tell an Odyssey’s nearby.

The starter of any late-90's mid-2000's straight-five Volvo is pretty much the same.

Also, the Mazda four cylinders of the mid-2000's have a very distinctive metallic sound sometimes that resembles the sound of a sword being unsheathed—not sure if that’s intentional or if they’re all broken.

Oh, and finally the groaning of some sort of solenoid in the transmissions of any late-90's early 2000's V6 Chrysler from the T&C to the Concord—a very distinctive whirring when it comes to a stop. Almost forgot that one, haven’t heard it in years since all those have since been junked.

Starters are a good one, I can tell a 6.0 Chevy starter or a V10 Ford starter a mile away. Exhaust is the easy one, of course.

On boats, I love to guess what kind of boat is going by without looking. You can often tell a pontoon boat from anything else because while it may have the same outboard engine sound as any other runabout, it is constantly working hard and doesn’t go by quickly enough for how hard the engine is working. Hear that? Still hear it? Still? Definitely a pontoon.

I used to be able to identify the specific boat going by, even from my bed. You hear a certain engine sound at a certain speed, it’s 2am, you hear people yelling to each other over the engine (from in the boat) and... yup that’s Bob or whatever. Oh wait, he sped up as he came around the point? Steve. Definitely Steve.

They changed it around ‘06, the earlier V6's sounded markedly different than the newer ones that crank faster that appear in the Ody and MDX since around ‘07.

Toyota trucks also have nosey PS pumps. Subi starters as well are very distinctive.

A lot of them.

Ford Ranger Vulcan V6 everything

GMT 360 starter motor

BMW F30 everything

VW EA888 1.8 Gen3 everything

B8.5 Audi A4 2.0T everything

I’ve spent too much time in each of these.

Ditto on the Nissan starter motors. The starter on my VG33ER powered Xterra sounds the same as the starter on the 2.5L 2003 Sentra SE-R I just got rid of, which also sounds the same as the starter on my dads old 1.5L 1987 Sentra.

Fuel pumps on GMT 400 trucks. They make a high pitch whine that I can hear a long way away. I always know when there’s one in the vicinity.

I remember the Ford power steering whine, too.

The Porsche 944 has a VERY distinctive injector tick. A lot of people mistake it for top end noise, but it’s just the injectors. They’re incredibly loud.

Also the power steering pump on every GM product ever built (but primarily J-Bodies), because every single one of them driving on the road right now is failing, and whining.

When I lived right next to LAX I could identify the aircraft coming in by the engine sound. I could cheat sometimes because I knew which aircraft was coming in at any given time and could amaze friends and family by telling them the airline based on sound and time of day.

But for automotive sounds? It has to be the old Chrysler gear-reduction starter motors from the ‘60s and’70s. There was no mistaking that sound for anything else.

Oh man, Ford power steering pumps are bizarrely distinctive. I grew up in Taurii, so I’m very familiar. Also the sound of a Vulcan at idle.

Chevy 4.3 V6 weird burble that they all seem to have, because 2/3 of a 350 and also they usually have leaky exhaust.

2000s Hyundai 4 cylinder starters, one of the most pathetic sounding starters ever.

I know there’s more, but it’s hard to think of them without hearing the sound.

My family had an Aerostar as well. PS pump whined like a millennial. Another unmistakable sound is the old, huge Ford starters. ‘81 F250 and ‘69 Mustang had one. wwwwrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I can - or could when they were a thing - always identify Ford Kent starters as fitted to the Mk1 and Mk2 Escort.

Also the original Mini (gear whine and the Renault 4. Modern cars are I’m afraid much of a muchness.
