Why is the LS so ubiquitous?

Is it the durability? The Power? The MPG? The weight? The aftermarket? The standalone ECU? Partially. But mostly it’s the size.

I looked under the hood of a C6R a few years back. I was stunned at how empty the engine bay was!

Truth. While overhead cams have their advantages, it’s tough to beat the packaging of good ‘ole single-cam pushrod engines.

1.) Good design

2.) Compact

3.) Cheap

4.) They made a ton of them. Most of them aren’t even “LS” motors.

It’s compact, it’s cheap, and you can find them with aluminum blocks so they often weigh LESS than the motor they’re replacing. It’s the perfect swap engine for a reason. That being said, their exhaust note isn’t all that amazing— I much prefer the sound of a BMW V8 or a Coyote.

You can make reliable, cheap power with an LS, and it fits in most places pretty easily. One guy from here in Indiana actually went through 2 motors during Drag Week. He ended up running his car with three different displacements during the week, swapping one bottom end out in the drag strip parking lot. Plus, they can handle a lot of boost using a truck bottom end, if you like to party.

Ls7 crate engine. 454 lbs with intake, throttle body, fuelrails injectors, exhaust manifolds, coils plugs wires, pan, water pump, balancer AND a heavy 57 lb clutch/flywheel assembly. Not included in that number is alternator, power steering pumps or external aluminum dry sump tank.

I’ve nearly completed a series of about 75 mini articles for Summit that has specs for 45-ish gen 3/4 Rpo codes. Gen4 truck engines went batty with different combinations of blocks, displacement, afm, vvt, heads, etc. so it’s taken a while. Working on ls4 and Ls7 this week and finishing up with lsa and ls9 next week. Articles include introductions and common basic upgrade paths. I can’t see an old Chevy truck rolling down the road now without wondering what the 8th digit of the VIN is.

As fun as the name would suggest it is, it’s just their way of saying variable valve timing.
