Kinja'd!!!

What services do you use to replace the TV service? Hulu? Netflix? Amazon prime?

Wife wants to watch hokey from time to time and Hulu doesn’t have that channel. I want to watch recently released movies and I don’t think there is ondemand with either Hulu, Netflix or Amazon.

What do you guys use?

What do you mean they don’t have on demand? Isn’t literally all of their content on demand?

As for hockey, does slingtv have the channel you need?

I’ve got prime, netflix, and Motogp Videopass. I tried hulu but iirc they still show commercials even though you pay a subscription fee which I wasn’t cool with. Prime does let you rent/buy new movies. I watch NHL games by going to reddit.com/r/nhlstreams If the NHL didn’t blackout wings games in my area I would just pay for Gamecenter.

I don’t know what team you’re watching but between these 3 you usually can find what you’re looking for. Just make sure you’ve got uBlock.

I don’t really like the last site there. My last resort site. Make sure your AV is up to date on that one.

Get YouTube TV if they have it for your area. $30, no additional taxes/fees, and comes with a lot of sports channels. In additional to your local broadcasts, you get ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FS2, NBCSN, CBS Sports, in addition to a few more ESPN channels and some other college networks. And you can share it with five other ‘family’ accounts, and everyone gets their own unlimited DVR.

I have sling TV with the sports package. It has NBCSN and NHL Network so that should cover your hockey. It’s been a little glitchy with app weirdness and stream stutters here and there but acceptable to me for the price being half of what I was paying for my dish. I also watch a fair amount on Amazon prime. I have prime mainly gor the shipping so streaming is a nice bonus. I have three TV’s. Two have Roku’s and one has a Fire TV stick. The sling app is the same on both (and on the phone). It is pretty good except there is no way to jump multiple channels that I can figure out so it sometimes means lots of scrolling or typing in a search. The cool thing about an app over a cable box is that they can update the app whenever to improve it. Hopefully it gets better soon but it’s not bad. With both Roku and Fire you can use a phone app as a remote which is nice for they keyboard or voice control to type in searches quickly.

Amazon rents movies, so that can cover your recent releases. I don’t think you need Prime to use it. Some of the Amazon original content is good (Mozart in the Jungle is one of my favorite shows, The Tick is good so far, I really liked Mad Dogs). They also have The Grand Tour, so there’s that. Oh, and the free shipping is totally worth it on its own.

Hulu is probably the most direct TV replacement of the ones you mentioned. You get NBC and ABC stuff (CBS are greedy assholes so you don’t get theirs anywhere) and quite a few other cable channels like Comedy Central. Hulu also has quality originals, while I couldn’t get into A Handmaid’s Tale it won a lot of awards, though I was a fan of Dimension 404 and I’m looking forward to season 2 of Chance.

Netflix is a behemoth with a ton of original content. Some might argue too much, as they appear to have taken the shotgun approach recently, but you can probably find something you like. If you’ve never had it there’s plenty of binging opportunities on really good TV (Orange is the New Black, Love, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Stranger Things, Making A Murderer, Master of None, Ozark, Glow are all personal favorites). Also Netflix bought Jerry Seinfeld and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

You might look into Sling TV. It’s a more traditional TV replacement but I don’t use it so I can’t comment on it. I have satisfied the stuff it offers by borrowing my parents’ cable login to access the various cable network shows I watch (AMC, FX, HBO, Starz)

I have been without cable for almost 3 years now and I can’t imagine going back. Even if I didn’t have a cable login there are...ways...of watching stuff I care about, though I would probably just move on and forget about most stuff. Like CBS, there were a few shows I enjoyed but since they have stashed away their streaming behind a custom service I have simply stopped watching and not even noticed.

i’ve been thinking about doing something like this for a long time. The problem I always run into is that when you take away TV from the bundle package the internet price doubles. Then you go get Amazon or Hulu or whatever and you are right back at the cost you started with

We cut the cord 2 years ago.. Direct TV was $140 or so..

A combination of the following takes care of everything:

Sling TV (a lot of content and international channels)

+

Amazon Prime (rent / buy new movies)

+

Netflix (everything else - kids shows, etc)

+

An extremely fast internet.

I have never had cable so my perspective may be skewed (other than when I lived at home with my parents before college). For the longest time, I only torrented or streamed stuff while at school. Since graduating and getting a real job, I use Amazon and Netflix exclusively. Both of these work well on my PS3 hooked up to a nice 1080p Epson projector with a wired ethernet connection. I have tried using both over Chromecast but with the 2.4 GHZ version that I have, Wifi is just unacceptable for smooth HD streams. Would highly recommend the 5 GHz version if you have to go a wireless route.

Of course this is completely lacking any live TV or sports channels. My girlfriend and I are moving in together shortly and we both want to add some more services to the mix. What we planned to do was add on Hulu as well as either Youtube TV or Sling TV since that should then cover just about everything. While in the end this would all cost about the same as cable, we would avoid commercials. I CANNOT STAND paying for cable AND getting commercials. That is just absolutely unacceptable to me at ANY cost.

Netflix even lets you make different profiles for different people.

For hockey specifically, you’ll either have to pony up for the right Sling package, or pay for the NHL.tv service assuming you’re not in the area where “your” team plays, because blackouts. OR use a VPN - I do this, and put myself in the Netherlands. I use this method to watch the Red Sox, then Eurosport for world cup alpine skiing, dakar rally, ERC, TopGear (UK) on BBC... I don’t watch a ton of TV by any means, but most of what I watch is via VPN.

Then Netflix, and Amazon prime because we already have it for the free 2-day shipping.

As a bonus, when we cancelled our cable, nothing changed. We still get basic cable and then some, using only the TV to tune the channels (no box).

I use Netflix, Prime (already had it any way) and Hulu. I shared log in with a family member, so it’s their Hulu, my Netflix. Even though we live thousands of miles away, it hasn’t been an issue.

Beyond that, I use a digital antenna for football. It would be a lot harder in my area to get any real hockey w/o buying a specific service.

I went with DirecTV Now last year and am quite happy with it. We got in as early birds, so we’ve got the pretty good package for $35/mo. It includes NBCSN/NHL as well. In our market, Directv Now has local channels now too. We have antennas and the HD signals for local channels is really good. Picture quality is excellent. We use Mofu Leaf antennas.

Last year, throughout the season, the NHL had 1 free game daily on the NHL App, so if you aren’t watching for a particular team, you could do that. A monthly subscription to NHL Center Ice is $24/mo. They also have a really long free period to start the year, 2-3 weeks.

Christ. On Demand in its most literal form means to be able to click a movie and it plays. I’m sorry I didn’t pick up on your definition of it, I hope you can forgive me.

Being able to watch recent movies, you probably have to pay on a per movie basis with Amazon, or some other service. Or wait a bit longer for Netflix to release it. Or Amazon, depending on who bought the rights for it.

Cut the cord 5 years ago.

I use Roku’s on my TV’s. Have tested a few others, but the Roku’s were the most reliable.

Netflix: have had it for what seems like forever (6+ years). Thinking about dropping it as I can never find anything to watch. Mostly b and c rate movies or series that I don’t care about. I think the problem is that I have already watched much of the content available (that I cared about) and studios withdrawing their movies from the service.

Hulu: for the wife. I can’t stand all of the commercials and most of the content is of little interest to me.

Sling: Currently using, but thinking about leaving to go back to PSVue. Decent price and very few issues with lag or choppy playback (except for HGTV). There are some issues though.

Most (many) of the on-demand movies will not let you fast forward AND will not resume from where you left off. Meaning, that if you watched half of a movie and had to stop, you then have to re-watch the movie from the beginning and can’t forward to where you left off. Very much sucks.

Sling subscribers do not have access to the NBCSN app. You are limited to watching live on NBCSN.

PSVue: used this in the past. More expensive than Sling. Had lag and choppy playback issues (mostly with ESPN (sometimes unwatchable), BeIN and NBCSN).

Huge issue is that Sony only wants you to use the PSVue service at home. Their app (at least on iOS) will not allow you to view 80%+ of the content even if you are watching from within your house. You get a ‘content restricted’ message. You are supposed to instead download the channels app in order to view the content. Issue with this is that some of the apps for a given channel are pure shit (looking at you Fox Sports), you will need to have potentially dozens of apps just for TV and you will have to view the PSVue app to see what you might want to watch and then go to the channel’s app to actually view the content. Pain in the ass.

Amazon: Have this for prime shipping. Find very little content that I care about on this service. Many of the rentals are too expensive. Many of the purchases cost the same as ordering a physical disk (which I would rather have anyway, your access to a physical disk can’t be ‘turned off’ like your access to electronic content).

Hulu has a commercial free option. I think it’s $3 more a month, so $11 or $12? I pay for it, it’s worth it. Occasionally there is a show that is exempt from the commercial free but they just play a short ad before and after the show, nbd.

I did not realize how common the SMART TVs have become. While I do have 2 PS3s, I have never used them for calling up any of the services.

On that note, Samsung does smart TVs much better than Sony. So much better. Have 3 Sony (32"/46" /65)“s and 1 Samsung (55"). The Samsung just blows the Sony(s) away in terms of app structure.

I have directv now + hbo. $40

Internet $40 (basically sunk cost)

Amazon Prime that I don’t watch but probably will since it is coming to the Apple TV (also sunk cost)

Netflix -$10

Share Hulu with a friend for Netflix

Antenna -$10 1 time purchase

Apple TV was free with 3 months of directv now

I think directv now is miles cheaper than cable. I was paying $65 and had like 17 channels. Not even ESPN and the like. Now I have 70ish I think. The antenna gets you a lot of local sports and prime time network stuff

I’ll still have cable indefinitely because it’s still the only way to get 90% of college football. That’s pretty much the only thing I need it for but I’ll occasionally catch the news during a big disaster or whatever which is nice.

YouTube, believe it or not, has replaced all of the light-fare I used to watch on TV. I pay for Red (which also gives you Google Music FWIW) which gets rid of all the ads then I have a pretty well curated subscription box that I go through once or twice a week and add to the watch later queue. Go into the app on Xbox and go to library->watch later and it just plays them all commercial free. There’s lots of original content on there.

I’ve also got Netflix for long running TV shows my wife likes to binge on, Prime that I’ll use every so often, and Viki for Asian Dramas.

There’s way more decent stuff on this lineup, even ignoring cable, that I could never possibly consume it all.
