I don’t identify as one of those hippy types, but the more I learn about myself the more I feel I benefit from some form of meditation. I’m at the early stages of this mind freeing journey, trying to figure out what has the right results for me.

So my question, do you meditate and what do you do?

Hippy tanks for your time.

No time to meditate when there are codes to read and gas caps to reinsert.

I usually meme-itate. I sit and look at memes when I need a break from normalcy.

That does happen a lot. I see P0440 too often and I just tell them to screw in the gas cap all the way.

I do, at yoga and I also use the head space app. It’s much easier for me at yoga because the environment plays a big part for me. I have to be totally undisturbed to be able to concentrate at it.

I hike, I go alone almost everyday. I have a 3 mile loop that I do which takes about an hour. Phone and wallet in the car so there is nothing to distract me from my walk. It’s super peaceful.

I’ve tried, and I want to more...it’s just had to do it.

I find if I am doing an activity where I can shut my active mind off it helps me get in that zone.

I do! So glad to see someone on here looking into meditating. There are tons of helpful resources that can help you along. Calm.com is great for short, guided meditations and they have plenty of free sessions before you run out and have to pay. Headspace is also good for 10 free intro sessions that also give you step-by-step instructions on all you need to know to get started.

I like to meditate for 30 minutes after my yoga sessions and 10 minutes during work breaks. I started off only being able to meditate with the guided sessions but now I feel fine doing it by myself, and sometimes just take a few breaths to get myself back to the present moment at any time. That’s kind of where we all want to get to. Being in constant state of meditation or at least being comfortable enough to catch ourselves when we are lost in thought or being reactive to emotions.

Either way, just do it. I don’t find it to be hippy, and I’m probably the least hippy dude among my friends. Also, meditating is something a lot of people already sort of do. Whenever they are in the moment and intensely focused on something like a live performance or competitive sport, it could be said that they are meditating. You just have to practice doing it without the external circumstances allowing you to.

This probably also explains why meditating helps so much with depression, social anxiety, and anxiety in general. In situations where we are forced to perform, we are left to trust instinct that comes from hours and hours of practice. In this instance, we aren’t aware of whatever is unnecessary, we are in the zone. Meditation gives precious hours of practice in letting strings of thoughts go , whether it be the downward spiraling, negative ones that can literally dig a hole in your own mind and leave you depressed, or even the happy, colorful string of balloons that can leave you high as a kite expecting an imagined future or outcome that was never in your control and will hurt like hell when you inevitably fall. These are the root causes of symptoms such as anxiety and depression. They are symptoms of our undisciplined mind, not a psychological disease to be treated with a lifetime of drugs.

If I ever need to clear my head I usually take a drive out to a good road to drive on. Or if I don’t feel like driving end up practicing with my pen-testing tools, whether it’s picking locks, cracking wifi passwords, or playing around with metasploit on my test server.

I definitely agree with what you’re saying. I feel that we meditate and don’t even realize it at times - sporting, deep in to work, etc. I listen to podcasts on my drive in to work, they’re typically interviews with top performing people across a variety of topics. The very common thread is that they all meditate.
The more I ponder on my approach to head space, I almost think my drive listening to podcasts is my personal form of meditation. It’s when I clear my mind and where I often find the answers to problems I have been working over in my head.

With that said, I am wanting to take that to a more focused level. I don’t feel depressed and I have quite a lovely life, but I want to escalate my feeling and awareness. There are times that I kind of look at the world around me, I know that all is so good, but just don’t feel anything. Those times when I get out of the car after my drive in with a clear mind, I feel the sun on my face, the wind, the joys in my life, it’s like opening a faucet up and it just rushes.

Today I looked in to affirmation and started researching the steps. While I don’t see immediate results in my affirmations, the feeling of putting the words down was good. It became a flow and felt more substantial just in the few minutes I started looking in to it.

Anyway, thank you for the recommendations!! I will look in to those.

I feel my drive in listening to podcast helps me find some space to clear my mind. I typically take a 1 mile to 1.5 mile loop walk on lunch, but I’m wanting to focus that a little more I think. I love the sensation of clearing my thoughts. That peacefulness is quite nice for sure!!

I also find the time to drive a couple times a week. Not like commute drive but, really get out there and enjoy it, backroads and such. I probably only get two hours a week nowadays but, it really helps with keeping my head clear.

Not in Tennessee, it is one of my favorite band’s (Whitechapel) logo.

Lights off, sitting in the shower. Sounds weird, but if you’ve got the kind of mind and body that struggles to just “do nothing” and let thoughts drift past without latching on to them I really do recommend trying it!

Having a mantra to repeat internally over and over can help you zone out as well. I latched onto “move with a purpose” back when I got paid based on how quickly I did physical labor. It was absolutely incredible how big of a difference it made to really get in the “no thoughts” state of mind vs just trying to move quickly.
