they are not wrong. You can turn the light off that way. Doesn’t mean you have fixed anything.

*pulls main battery fuse*

“See! No more check engine light!”

“But now my car doesn’t run!”

“Never mind that, the light is gone now!”

Wow, just pull the fuse? Great advice. Might as well just pull the bulb and ignore it.

Is check engine light clickbait the automotive equivalent of weight loss clickbait? Or is it more like debt reduction clickbait?

I had a guy work on my wife’s 82 Nissan Sentra (a long time ago, mind you). He was a retired master mechanic in the Marine Corps or something, could take apart and fix anything on the planet. The Sentra had some sort of sensor light on the dash. He covered it with a square of black tape. I never did get it fixed properly and never had any issues.

Might have been an ABS light. Those things are a very high annoyance to actual risk ratio and often a pain in the rear to eliminate.

No ABS on our Sentra, I can tell you that. And in retrospect, it was closer to an 87. No, it had the word “SENSOR” next to it. It was an O2 sensor or something. As you suggest, it wasn’t worth the time and effort to change it out. Car ran fine until the transmission started eating itself in 96.
