I'm thinking about buying a car in Germany

As you may or may not know, I’ve moved to Germany from Norway. This is a country where driving is easy, and there are Autobahns scattered all over. That’s why I am interested in getting a car, and thus need some tips.

Right now me and my Freundin borrow a VW Fox from her parents, while we are moving in and stuff. While it is surprisingly spacious and nice to drive in the city, it quickly runs out of breath when you want to go from one city to another. Cruising in 120-130 km/h means 4K RPM and lots of noise and petrol running into the engine. It’s not the most stable car either.

I’ve been looking at mobile.de, and I should be able to find something decent, but old with these criterias:

2000€
Manual gearbox (yes, I’m sure)
5-6 gears
Petrol>Diesel
Reliable
Non-VAG
More comfy than a VW Fox
Cheap insurance

The last criteria is the wildcard one. Are there certain types of cars that you can get cheaper insurance for in Germany, even if you’re 24-25 years old? Are there any ways to get good deals? I’d very much love to get a Volvo V70 in my price range, but yearly teilkasko insurance is almost half the price of the car..

>Get Renault Twingo

>Sell it to me (legally or otherwise)

>Profit and have bigger budget for car.

If I moved to France. You get them thrown after yourself there.

Any preferences about size (bigger than a Fox, but how much bigger?), fuel economy, power, body style (wagon, 3-door, 5-door, convertible, ...)? Location was Bremen, right?

I would prefer bigger than a Polo/Corsa too, other than that it’s pretty much open. Fuel economy is only important in the sense that lower revs would help on the Autobahn. I assume anything with lots of power and bad fuel economy is out of the picture due to expensive insurance anyways.

Yep, location is Bremen.

Good car, but as bad as the Volvo when it comes to insurance..

Decent cars and lots of rally pedigree. Larger than a Polo and must be cheap to insure. Cheap to buy too because Germans buy German.

Looks clean inside and out, located in Delmenhorst (so next door to you), absurdly low kms at 66k km, new TÜV Prüfung, only €1250. Replace the horrible hubcaps with some factory alloys and it looks decent enough too.

You should be able to find a Toyota something or other at that price but it’s likely to be very old and very tired.

So try a Micra. Very reliable, cheap to run. Very boring though. Or a Hyundai of some kind, but they’re just as boring.

Good call. It is at least 100€ cheaper per year than the other alternatives I’ve checked. Rally pedigree is always a bonus too.

I’ll check for a first-gen Avensis sedan.

Also consider the Nissan Primera, at least Clarkson liked it:

Considered one for my first car a few years ago, motorsport pedigree too. You can get nice ones for cheap, but it doesn’t stand out as especially cheap to insure.

How about a... *cough* Rover 75 diesel?

Suprisingly expensive and very expensive to insure. Those are probably cheaper in Norway!
