Never knew until today that there are 30 in North America and this is the largest. Also learned we have about 7000 burial mounds in Ohio. I have now seen 9 of those. Four of those we saw while attending the Southern Ohio Forest Rally in Chillicothe. Several were along the roads we traveled to get to the race stages. Was a great day out today, perfect 70-80 degree temps and afterwards we drove to get BBQ on the way back to Columbus. Its a great road trip with a few awesome driving roads thrown in. The picture files are big, don’t miss out by not looking at them enlarged on a computer.

The mound is on the rim of a 4 mile wide crater from an asteroid impact from 250 million years ago. The serpent mounds curved body and head has multiple alignment marks with equinox sunsets and moonrises. Would like to be here someday when one of those points align. In the panoramic picture below you can see two smaller burial mounds at each end of the shot.

Ohio rules! The Mound building native Americans were rad! I live near Fort Ancient. I recommend giving it a visit!

I’ll have to get there sometime. We started exploring a bit more of places we’ve never visited in the state.

If you go to see both I have 2 suggestions for food.

1. The Pub on Broadway in Granville

2. Whits in Granville and or Heath

Have you ever visited any of the conical mounds in the Dayton area?

I went to the serpent mound years ago, but I really need to go back with my son sometime.

We hit Old Canal Smokehouse in Chillicothe on the way back. Wife and daughter agreed that the food there is awesome. It was our top choice in May while there for the rally.

No didn’t even know conical ones existed. Will have to look into those. Might be in Dayton later this month but can’t work that into plans. Will have to be another time.

Miamisburg has the largest conical mound in eastern North American. There’s another sizable mound in Enon and a third near Cedarville University.

There are multiple smaller burial mounds on the same grounds as the Wright Brothers memorial near the USAF museum. They are small enough that they’re hard to spot without consulting a map they have pointing them out.

Then there are two more small burial mounds just off the trails of the Glenn Helen nature center owned by Antioch University in Yellow Springs.

Given the history of the area there may be more small ones I’m not aware of.

I’ve been to Wright-Patterson before and was thinking about another trip to see the addition. Will have to figure in seeing those mounds as well.

Yeah, if you’re at the museum the memorial where the mounds are located only a little over a half mile from the museum entrance. The mounds themselves are very small, but it’s worth it if you’re already there. The new hanger alone is well worth the time for a visit though.

Depending on where your coming from the mound in Enon isn’t very far, and all you can really do is drive past so a visit to check it out wouldn’t take long. It’s in an unusual position that it’s basically the center of a circular residential street with houses build all around the opposite side of the street.

Never heard of it. I’ll have to go when I go to the Serpent Mound.
