The producers got just the right balance of surreal and creepy for the movie with this one, in my opinion.

I watched that movie a week or so ago. I’m not sure it holds up very well. OTOH, I watched Blade Runner yesterday. Holy shit, what an amazing movie. I prefer the cut without Deckard’s voice over, though.

I think you have to get your mind into it for what it was. Total Recall was like a funky dream that you wake up from and immediately realize how implausible it was, except that while you were in it at the time, everything made sense.

Blade Runner is completely believable and well constructed, more like a nightmare that you wake up from and still makes sense when you try to explain it to someone. It still has the power to depress me every time I see it.

I know it’s apples and oranges. One is a well-thought out throwaway, the other is a masterpiece. Interestingly, both are based on stories by Philip K. Dick. I have read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? , the (loose) basis for Blade Runner . If the movie depresses you, then the book will likely make you suicidal.

That’s why I stay away. I like my dystopian futures in small doses.

I read that Philip Dick was absolutely thrilled with the cast selection for Blade Runner. He thought Ford, Hauer, and especially Sean Young were exactly as he had pictured them. That’s pretty unusual considering he didn’t write the screenplay or produce the movie.

I did. Didn’t watch the whole thing, but it’s one of those movies that I will always stop and watch if I come across it. It’s too bad Sean Young turned out to be such a space cadet. She was great. The whole cast was. But I still don’t like the voice over.
