I am having lunch.

Kinja'd!!!

Update: Due to a hole in the bellhousing, a new tranny is needed. I talked to trusted mechanic Keith (I always regret taking my cars anywhere else). He said an automatic will be easy to find. He is not excited about a manual conversion, largely due to the clutch pedal. Ironically, he was in process of coverting a 66 Mustang from manual to auto, a job that will make an enthusiast’s head implode.

Opponaut MR2_FTW pointed me to an AE86 option, as well as an aftermarket fix, but his experience was an MX72 Cressida, and mine is the older MX63. Does it make a difference? I don’t know.

You have to understand that Keith is naturally grumpy. If you look at on line reviews, that is the main criticism. I have been taking my cars to him for about 10 years, and he is blunt and scrupulously honest, so he can grump freely.

If I push, I think he will do the conversion for me. Should I? It is for my wife, who would probably be happy with the auto. But manual Cressida sounds so cool....

Ask your wife what she wants. It’s her car, after all.

Sounds like she is ok either way, but I bet she has a preference one way or the other.

Do what she prefers. Sounds like Keith can get there either way.

Can you not buy bellhousings independently?

Do what she really wants, he may be grumpy, but you also have to remember you’re paying him. At the end of the day, do what you/your wife wants.

I’ve found if you don’t get what you want you settle for a while and then get exactly what you want in the long run. Makes it cheaper to get what you want to start with.

I looked at an auto/manual conversion once. So much stuff on the car is specific to that transmission, from the way the exhaust is routed, to the transmission mounting plates, to holes in the firewall for clutch pedals etc.... It looked like way too much work for me to take on.

I would put some JB weld over the hole and stick with the auto. I think too that the Cressedia is a cruiser, an auto is perfect in a cruiser, if anything look for a nice locking torque converter so no as much power is lost in the lower rev range.

Look man. I had to buy a car mostly for the wife (CX-3 Auto) for $25K CDN.

Of course there are so many manual cars I could buy for $25K, but it is her car and her choice.

If she’d be happy with the auto, that’s time and money that could be well spent on other projects.

What kind of driving will this car see? Discuss that with her, I think. The Cressida was designed as a luxury cruiser, right? So, an auto fits it, but if the kind of driving she wants to do in it makes her want a manual, it’s ultimately her toy.

I would never press a mechanic to do anything he is not comfortable with. Sounds like this guy Keith will tell you if he doesn’t want to do it. But, he might be able to point you to someone good.

Here is my thought. Get a second hand transmission. Rob the bell housing, keep transmission as a spare.

If you want to dive into a manual later whatever. Go for the quick fix now, if she isn’t asking for a manual like you say she isn’t caring, auto is one less thing to concentrate on verses the Cali scenery.

I would keep it automatic but have a performance machine shop do some kind of not-crazy all motor build on the engine. At one point there were various things like stroker kits and cams and whatnot available for it. Would be really cool to have a relaxed cruiser but with something like more modern oomph.

Should have been his only plan from day one. A v12 manual swap actually..

Does she want the manual?

If you keep the auto, you’ll have one of each for what you want to do. Long cruise Cessida, twisty mountain road, sunchaser.

What transmission would you go with if you went manual? Can you use a W58 or W55?

You might be able to source the pedal assembly from ebay.

Would something like this work: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mk2-Toyota-Celica-Supra-Manual-Transmission-Conversion-Toyota-Cressida-1982-1985-/162688887127?hash=item25e1036957:g:yLgAAOSwrOtZsHCm
