Turned on the scanner for the local state police station, they’re talking about setting up a spike strip on the interstate. This should be interesting.
1:19 AM: Car being chased is a white Mazda, they said something about the occupants firing on the police cars in pursuit
1:22 AM: An officer on a different call just gave the name (spelled even), date of birth, license number, and social security number of a person (suspect?) on an unencrypted radio frequency. Dude should work for Equifax
1:28 AM: State police have been told to stand down and let the Springfield police engage in pursuit, but be ready in case the car gets back on the highway. Springfield does encrypt their frequency, so no way to hear what’s going on there
1:29 AM: Chase has switched to foot pursuit. Or possibly one suspect on foot one still in car
1:33 AM: Foot pursuit is on the railroad tracks. And heeeeeeeere comes a train. Seriously.
1:47 AM: Still searching for suspect on foot. Dispatch called in to inform officers that the suspect has a long record of violence and weapons charges and is currently on probation.

Scanners are pretty pointless in the U.K., the police radios are encrypted so you’ll get the odd truck driver or private security company, sometimes you can hear the aircraft in the local area or military aircraft heading south through the Mach Loop.

Yeah, it’s hit or miss here in the States. Some departments encrypt, some don’t. It’s that whole “security vs transparency” argument

I can’t help but think of the sign at Mazda Raceway (aka Laguna Seca) which proudly reads that Mazdas are raced more than any other brand on any given weekend.

Those “encrypted” channels use the most laughable, presidentially “sad” crypto-keys. If you capture one key electronically, you can decrypt every monthly rollout of new crypto. They don’t use mil-spec standards on securing their comms lines. Hell with a powerful enough UHF receiver/transmitter you can DoS targeted radios in a given freq range.
Back at Camp Lejeune, when we were on artillery field ops and had quiet hours (no shooting) we used to leave two or three radios set up just to screw with PMO and local Jacksonville/Onslow County PD. It is hard to trace UHF/VHF radio interference, even when it is deliberate. Usually your target with just roll to a new channel, so you use another radio to blow that channel up too.
