Kinja'd!!!

I’m starting to make plans to do at least one and maybe two Oppo Rallies next year. I want to start with a quick question regarding scheduling. As most may remember the previous Oppo Rally was on Memorial Day weekend. This was good in that the Monday holiday meant an extra day for the more distant competitors to get back home, but bad in that it meant increased traffic due to the holiday and, in the case of Memorial Day in particular the awards day was held on what’s arguably the biggest racing day of the year (Monaco, Indy, Nurburgring 24, Coke 600, World RX at Lydden Hill, etc). So the question is, should I shoot for holding the next one on a three day weekend as well, or aim for a normal, non-holiday weekend?

The rally will definitely be somewhere between May and September, for the sake of longer daylight and a better chance of good weather. Also the schedule format will be the same as it was for the first Oppo Rally: Registration open from 7-9 AM on Saturday (with those arriving first having more time to go over the checkpoints and plan their route), rally start at 9 AM, rally finish at 10 PM, awards at ~9:30 AM Sunday morning. (Alternately, on a three day weekend it could be rally on Sunday, awards on Monday if people would prefer that.)

If you missed Oppo Rally and have no idea what I’m talking about then you need to catch up on the awesomeness.

Oppo Rally 2017 was a blast, but it was sad to miss out on memorial day racing. I voted for a two day non holiday weekend because the only other definite 3 day weekend is labor day weekend, and like a lot of other people I always have plans that weekend.

I vote for further west.

Second going further west! When it comes to national level smart rallies, they’re typically planned more towards the middle of the country as they’d pull in the most people.

Third. Or I guess those of us closer to the middle of the country plan our own.

I can do whatever. My biggest time restriction these days is work travel, and I’m getting alarmingly close to telling them to shove it so a regular weekend or a holiday one can work for me, tentatively.

Can we do one that starts in the United States but all the destinations are in Canada? It sounds a tad absurd, but I’m down....

For those looking for something similar but on the other side of the Atlantic: The week before Easter (as in: up to 5+ days long): Wales, UK. For those that fly in and with some help from UK participants (we’ve worked this out already, somewhat) you can opt for the purchase of a beater of your choice rather than a rental as well, usually for less money than a decent rental.

I can’t remember if you had for a block of rooms where the awards breakfast was, but I do wish I’d stayed there. I barely made it home and I don’t think I woke up until my brother called me from the awards! That was a long freakin day! (I realize you can’t be responsible for the number of hours people chose to drive, but for ‘locals’ it’s of course tempting to just stay at home) I should have stayed near the finish/breakfast. Wish I’d been there!
