I don’t know why you wouldn’t do that with the Jag, honestly. I had a 2000 F150 that developed a rod knock, so I put a junkyard motor in it. Afterwards I thought, hey, I should have just driven the thing until it blew up if I was gonna do that.

Yeah. It’s getting super hard to find 350s in junkyards these days though. Like, it’s ridiculous. Especially here in hot rod territory where everyone is hoarding the fuckers for their rat rod made from soup cans and baling wire.

It doesn’t take up that much space to rebuild an engine. A kitchen would be enough room- you just have to be quick so that you don’t bother your partner/roommate much. Or layout a tarp and do it in the living room. I had a friend do that when he lived in an apartment.

The trick is that you also don’t know when it’ll give out. A tow is an expensive and time consuming endeavor, it could also give out when you’re doing something dangerous, like a left turn onto a busy street...

Yeah, base 350s have gotten expensive. They haven’t been made in long enough that junk yards have stopped having so many vehicles with them in it. You might be fine with something like a 5.3 - they’re pretty available, reasonably cheap and make some decent power, plus you get EFI when done.

I pulled a steering wheel out of a Yukon in a Pick n Pull last week that had a 5.3 LS just chillin there, waiting to be put in a Jaguar. Wasn’t even a truck that just got there, so I was shocked nobody snagged that motor yet for what...$325 or so.

Last time I went looking for a junkyard 5.3 I found several complete running pulls with wiring harness for right around 700 which is definitely cheap for a running “modern” engine. If you pull it yourself from a “pick n pull” style junkyard you can probably get everything you need for $300, same as a 350...
