Kinja'd!!!

The roll pin that retains the center pin migrated out, allowing the center pin to migrate outward and impact the pinion gear.

This explains the sudden, violent stop!

Pinion gear is sad.

Many, many years ago, I had the same thing happen in my first vehicle, a 1981 Ford Courier. In my case, it is quite possible that copious amounts of power-braking abuse caused the issue. The pin that holds the spiders in place wedged itself between the ring and pinion at about 35 MPH... it was quite possibly the most violent (non-crash) stop I have ever experience in a pickup truck.

Obviously this is your Jeep telling you it doesn’t want an open diff any more.

Tell her it broke and needs new parts anyhow so might as well upgrade to something better/more reliable so it doesn’t happen again. Realistically it’s not that big a stretch of the truth to need new gears, and since it costs so much to set them up and the shock from the centre-pin bringing the whole Jeep to a stop could have put micro-fractures into the carrier so it’s probably junk, might as well put something better in with the new gears so there’s no danger of that happening. And it’s like, $300 to do it now over the price of the same stuff going in, but $1000 to do it all over again when you upgrade in the future...

I was just asking myself the same thing... In my younger years, I relentlessly beat the tar out of all my vehicles and never had a single axle issue... Now that I’m nice to my cars, they fall apart. :(

You know, he’s not wrong and his follow up argument is definitely sound. It make sense if you planned on doing it anyways.

It was bad enough having that happen when I rebuilt them. Let alone in a vehicle.
