Kinja'd!!!

I’m sure you’ve all been deeply concerned that there might be one less Taurus wagon in the world, so allow me to put your minds at ease.

Somehow, it didn’t get totaled. I know it doesn’t look like much, but it needed a new hood, bumper cover, headlight, and radiator support. I think the quote was $4500 or something. I still don’t know how that didn’t total it.

The shop he took it to did quite a good job, the panel gaps are better than when it was new.

The only weird part is now the new paint on the front end is all polished and nice, and the rest of the car is not all polished and nice. I doubt anything will be done about that, I mean I’m certainly not going to polish a Taurus.

This has all been weird for my dad, it was his first accident in 38 years, so I’m glad he has his car back looking like it should. It may be an objectively fairly terrible vehicle, but he loves it for some reason.

I thought i felt a disturbance in the force.

If I didn’t have my current daddy-mobile I wouldn’t mind having a Taurus wagon as a winter car/ cargo carrier.

That probably should have totaled it. Yours looks to be in great shape but $4500 seems like it could be higher than the value of the car because of the age

That was because there’s one less Tercel 4WD in the world.

Just be wary of the weak transmissions. After about 3 years of using it like a wagon, and hauling things on road trips and business trips, the trans was overheated to death. Got rebuilt with a shift kit and widened oil channels, and got a trans cooler. It’s been fine since then, but that shouldn’t have been necessary. Also generally unimpressive build quality, but after that trans work, beefing up the rear suspension, replacing the computer, and the wiring harness, it seems to have decided to be reliable.

Oh it’s my dad’s, not mine. That’s what I thought too. He was finding Craigslist ads for low mileage ones for around that price, and I think argued that the transmission rebuild and modification made this one worth more than a low mileage one. I still don’t see how that would make it worth enough to save it from being totaled, but it worked somehow I guess.

My cousin got in an accident in her Saturn Ion about 5 years ago and it was totaled and they were about to sign on a newer used Pontiac G6 and then got a call that they fixed it on accident. So she got it back and sold it to us. It kept breaking the blower motor and had some weird issues probably as a result of the repairs so we ended up selling it. I used to still see it occasionally though. It’s been a while now. I can’t believe they went through the whole totaling process and then fixed it on accident.

I had a Windstar that I used for the same purposes that had the Taurus drivetrain and crap build quality so I’m generally comfortable with it, though my Windstar’s version was strangely reliable only needing a radiator and O2 sensors while I had it.

Tauruses were my go to rental before discovering Turo. Right size, predictable, reliable. I even had a ‘97 SHO. Glad it’s still on the road.

It seems like some of the windstars were weirdly okay, I’ve known a couple people that had awful ones that broke fairly regularly, and then I know someone who’s been driving one for the last 6 years or so and it’s perfectly fine, and it’s even an older one, 96 or something

Yeah, mine was a ‘96 with the 3.8l that I bought in ‘05. It had a multitude of assorted annoying issues but the engine/trans was solid. That’s what made it a good winter beater.

Your post caused me to do the math - 34 years since last accident that was my fault. Seventeen years later I was rear-ended by a guy in a Subaru with a kid. Minor damage to the SHO’s bumper - he wrote me a check for the damage.

Damn that’s also a really good record. I couldn’t believe how nice to him ICBC was, since his record was so good, they haven’t raised his rates since the accident.

If it’s anything like my insurance you can choose to put extra insurance on it for modifications. I can do so up to $5000. Right now $2000 worth of work would total it but if I had $3000 worth of mods for them to replace it wouldn’t.

Keep in mind - I drive 3 or 4 times a year since 2000 - sold my SHO in 2001, so I have very few miles behind the wheel since then.

I don’t think BC has that, but I’ll look into it for him
