Here is the big question.

Is there a car with popup headlights that looks better with it’s lights on and in an upward position?

From my knowledge, almost every car with popups looks better with the lights off.

The C5 Corvette, for example, looks very good with its headlights down.

When you flip the lights on however, it loses some of its mojo.

The only car I can think of that has lights that look better flipped up is the Porsche 928, and the only reason it looks better is that it has really unconventional popups.

Kinja'd!!!

The 928's lights look really strange while down because they are strangely recessed while not in use. (The reason for this is that it allowed drivers to wash their headlights more easily than they would be able to with conventional popups). The lights look a lot nicer when they come up.

So my question again is as follows:

Are there any cars who have popups that look better when they are up then when they are down?

I really didn’t like the look of my C5Z with the lights up.

The F40 is definitely up there for a car that look significantly worse with them up (even though you were looking for the opposite):

Fun car to own as a second car. Wouldn’t want one as a primary and only car again though. The trunk is ridiculous.

Honestly, you would be better off with a C6 with the LS3. I would go in that direction if I were to do it over again. Engine is better, transmission is better, better aerodynamics. Suspension is set up a little better too. Plus, it’s easier to fir wider tires. C6 is also easier to live with (slightly more quiet and less annoying sounds, minus the removable top). The C6 is a tiny bit more rigid, but the C5Z is a tiny bit lighter.

Yeah, it’s not as good as with the lights up.

This is honestly probably my favorite generation or corvette (this and the C2). I also really like the C5's rims.

I’d say Miata is tied for up and down. It looks good both ways.

Can we count the Austin-Healey Sprite “Bugeyes?”

Okay, so they aren’t actually popups, but they were supposed to be. The feature was cut due to costs giving us one of the happiest car faces ever.

I’d argue they look best when going up and down.

The C4 Vette was a full 180 flip, not actually a pop up. It had a fully painted molded shroud on the other side that helped it blend better when they were on

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t think it looked better with them open, but it is one of the better designs if you ask me.

This post was quite enlightening.

They are not actually pop ups but I love the xj220 lights. When they are closed it’s hard to tell how they could open. Then when they are open, you can’t really tell they would need to close. Great design.

I think thats the point though, right? That you don’t have line ruining lights unless you actually need them.

I never knew that’s how the headlights on a Riviera opened up, its beautiful. Can’t imagine it’d be fun to work on once they went bad though.

The question I always ask myself is why the popups? It already has significant lights

Kinja'd!!!

2000GT, mostly because when the headlights are down your brain tries to make the driving lights into the headlights and then the car looks odd.

Those are cool but they still look better when they’re down.

Yeah, but some cars look better with them up than others do.

I guess I can see it. I honestly think it looks good both ways, but that’s just me.

This is a good question. I believe that the F40 is like the Countach in the way that it has running lights as well as brighter popups
