Kinja'd!!!

Last month the “family car” got wrecked. I need to replace it and I’m darned tired of family cars. (2006 Lexus RX400h). The Lexus was rock hard dependable. It had 171K when it was totaled and was still going strong. Now I want something with a bit more umph to it, that can still do family duty, like driving on vacation. I had been looking at other Lexi and Infinitis, when this came on my radar. Its a 2011 Taurus SHO with 85K miles with a $13K dealer-price. Now, I do own a Ford, (1999 Windstar) that does duty as a junk and occasional people hauler and when it hit 85K, it was starting to get rough. At 100K I had a transmission rebuild when the reverse sungear went out, at 130K a freeze plug blew out and that required a major engine service, at 140K the steering rack needed to be replaced. So yeah, I’m aware that Fords aren’t going to be like a Toyota product.

Anyway, this particular car is not a pristine Carfax vehicle, it was a 2 owner Ohio lease car that now has made its way down south. Of course I’m concerned about corrosion. I’m also concerned about it being a Ford with 85K miles. The price really has me thinking though. 360HP Twin Turbo AWD for this seems like a performance bargain. Anyway, what’s the opinion on these? Is something going to grenade by 100K? (I hear about PTU fluid issues.)

Any advice appreciated.

Everyone will think your a cop.

My mom had one as a company car, and people always thought she was a cop.

No issues at all with the hybrid section/battery on the RX400h?

My neighbor has one that has never in its life stopped running. Let that sink in

Surprisingly no. The battery seemed to hit full charge and discharge (on the graph anyway) just like it had when I got it at 35K miles. Now my seat of the pants battery meter told me that I had lost maybe 25% of the previous maximum energy store but I had no hard evidence to pin that to. In my 135K miles of ownership, I lost a front wheel bearing, the 12V lead acid accessory battery, and a radiator (road damage). Otherwise everything was maintenance (timing belt) and road hazard damage. I never even had a brake job done to it, as the regenerative braking took care of most of that.

So I Have a 2015 and almost 40k in and it has been perfect. What I have heard from these is A. Rear suspension toe links and bushings. B. Engine mounts can leak. C. Tires are pricey. D. The t-case needs to Be maintained. The engines and trans should be good for the long haul.

Go for it.

85K isn’t many miles over 6-7 years (a tad high but more likely highway miles) and the Taurus is a robust platform, being both a Volvo S80 at its core, and beefed up for cop duty by Ford.

Reviews on Edmunds are positive.

BTW, you might consider a Pontiac G8 or Chevy SS also.

Decent price. I’ve been shopping retired Caprice squad cars near that price with 20k more miles on them. Have an independent shop put it on a lift and look it over. It may cost a hundy but it’s worth it.

You’re not gonna find an SS or G8 with a $13k price tag though, lol. Well, maybe a base G8. But not a GT or GXP, which are the ones you want.

Makes sense given the Interceptor was based off of the Taurus SHO, lol.

I’ve been looking at those too. It’s too hard to find one that hasn’t had holes drilled in the roof though. I need to find that retired slicktop, hahaha.
