I know this is the “wrong” generation of 911 and the headlights get a lot of hate, but that doesn’t matter to me, I still want one. Back around Christmas 2015 I was browsing the internet for them, and found several examples for between 40k and 50k. I was never a Porsche person, but they’ve really grown on me. If I had the finical resources, I’d have to pick one of these up.

I think the turbos may be starting to creep up, now that everyone realizes the IMS issue doesn’t apply to them.
I would love one of these, too — the runny eggs are the only downside to me, and you won’t see them when you’re driving anyways —

Yeah, I looked again this past week and values had crept up. I knew they didn’t have the IMS issue. Sometimes, I wish I had my old job back so I could get something like this, in addition to the E90. I like that damn thing too much.

I once drove a base Cayman. Yeah well, it got the same hp and less torque than a 535d, so it actually might have felt not really any faster but that chassis!!! Oh and that sound!!! That was when I understood what they are about. As much as I like BMWs, these cars just are in a different galaxy when it comes to cornering.

They have been. A year or two ago you could find a decent one in the low 30s around here, if not even the high 20s. The base Carreras have also been creeping up lately locally. I used to see them in the low teens, but now they’re usually in the high teens.

I dont know why, but I would take an E90 M3 over a 996. I have a weird fascination with all M3's to the point where I think Im sort of cheating on Mercedes

Yeah they’re cheap. Do they have an IMS issue? Seems to me I’ve heard that both ways. The newer Boxsters look a lot better to me - I love the 981-

Yep. All the issues of the 996 (IMS, same headlights as the early 996s) with less horsepower and the engine in a harder to reach spot. I like the early 981s, before they took the glorious flat 6 sound away and replaced it with a WRX engine. I personally prefer fixed roofs, so the Cayman is my bag. If there had been a 986 Cayman i’d have one in my driveway right now.

Ah - I suspected that was the case with the 986.
Apparently the harder they’re driven, the *less* likely the IMS is to fail. Considering how Boxsters seem to be driven - about as hard as your average Cascada based on my observations - that scares me a bit.
Totally agree on the 981. NA flat 6, that’s what I want. I’m a convertible guy, so I won’t fight you for the Cayman.

IMS is $1800 with rear main seal to have done at a shop, and odds are the RMS is already leaking anyway. Get a good deal on the car, change the bearing, drive happy.

$1800 is what it cost me at one of LN Engineering’s recommended shops, including the full validation to make sure the engine is healthy.

I could’ve bought a Turbo, but I’m glad I bought a 997 C4S instead.
Superior aesthetics aside, my car’s 381bhp is more than enough in such a little car for the street. As it is, it’s hard enough to find enough road to enjoy it. I can’t imagine a 996T, especially since I know it wouldn’t stay stock for long..

IMS bearings aren’t the biggest issue with the M96/M97 engines anyway. Cylinder scoring is a far more costly failure.
