Critters that want to kill you. As seen on a piece of equipment I’m currently working on. There was more than one and they all scurried off into the shadows yay. Now I get to reach my arm in and work on it.. For those who aren’t familiar it’s a black widow with Venom 15 times more powerful than a rattlesnake I’m told. I will not be testing that today hopefully.

Which is why I’m going to stay in the safety of a province that has winter. Winter kills all of the venomous things, it seems.

A black widow isn’t going to bite you unless you mess with it. What I’d be worried about is a wolf spider. The bite won’t kill you but they are very aggressive and it hurts like Hell. They love crawl spaces, just so you know.

I nuked the cowl tray of a Porsche 944 with starting fluid and a Zippo (10/10 would recommend, super effective) working in a junkyard as a kid. Found a widow hanging out in the wiper linkage, and I needed the motor. Pulled one from the next car in inventory, and deleted the first.

They aren’t that dangerous. People RARELY die from them, and those that do tend to be children or elderly. Plus, unlike a rattlesnake, they are easily crushable. I really don’t get the fear of spiders, they eat other insects and when they get too close to comfort... STEP...splat...dead.

When a spider encounters a human, it knows there’s no possible outcome where it can come out on top. Therefore, they generally keep their distance. Black Widows have a bad bite, but they won’t bite you unless you provoke them, and even then their first bite will be just a warning so that they can spook you and escape.

Wolf spiders aren’t aggressive. I lived with one for a few months because I know they eat much less desirable bugs and insects. I figured a little natural pest control couldn’t hurt. Plus, they’ve got binocular vision, which is kinda cool. And they can live for up to a year and a half. They’ll leave you alone if you leave them alone. Especially since that good vision of theirs means they can see you coming from a mile away.
Now that I have a cat who likes to investigate any creepy crawlies he finds, I don’t let wolf spiders alone. I’ll try to shoo them out if I can, or kill them if I have to. Last thing I need is my cat getting bitten on his nose or paw because he thought that giant spider was a new toy.

Long time resident of the south. Most spiders die pretty easily with just about any aerosol you use while working on something. I leave them alone if I can. I will normally kill a widow if it’s in the house though. The rest get to stay to control bugs or get escorted outside

Survived and even of it did bite you don’t fall over and die. Your flesh just begins to rot and then you die plenty of time to call loved ones :)

We get the writing spiders that big here but they are harmless. Still creepy as hell to see them that big.

In this unfortunate circumstance it’s trapped inside some equipment that is a tight space i had to reach into for about 30 minutes and fiddle around to repair so the danger of a bite is real in this case but agree average spider in the average setting is a zero threat.

It’s also 1/1000th the size of a rattlesnake. But point taken. I sprayed for spiders at our old house because we had small kiddos, and even though a bite isn’t going to be fatal even to them, it’s still going to hurt more than a be sting (and wasps are not welcome either). I’d kill a wasp in equipment I was working on, not because it’s deadly, but because a sting would hurt like a mother.
