Kinja'd!!!

Our Evo is back from the bodyshop after being rear ended a month ago. They didn’t do any work, just evaluated it for the insurance company. They did mark up every nick and ding, regardless of if it was part of the accident or not. Now we start the road down getting a salvage title. The car kind of looks like the famous Porsche Pink Pig.

Wow bet you didn’t know it was that bad.

Seriously though I always wondered how this process goes. Good luck and sorry about your car.

So why was this totaled?

Its really not that bad. Just every nick and ding marked on the car. I will need new front and rear bumper bars and I need to get a rail slightly straightened.

Still sucks, but that will be a fun track/autocross car.

A slightly buckled frame rail where the driver side bumper bar attaches to the chassis, a buckled front bumper bar and the fact that it is 14 years old and has 150K miles on it. Really, it was because of the cost of repainting it. It’s kind of crazy. It is totally fixable, but the cost of repair, once again mostly paint, is over 75% of the value of the car.

Ahh, I was expecting to see some carnage on the backside and it didn’t look that bad

Yeah it looks like they were dinging you for a full repaint. I can see why you wanted it back. Was it easy getting it back from the insurance company? I assume you had to buy it back was the price decent?

They offered me two prices. One was for them to retain the car and the other was if I retained it. They offered $10500 if they kept it and $5500 if I did. No struggle to keep it. Just paperwork.

I read your reply to Strightsix as to what is wrong with it. Cosmetically, I can’t see anything except for all the white pen marks. Any reason why you can’t just drive it as is?

I’m surprised they’d give you full collision coverage on a car that old. The probably decided the payout was equal to the premiums you’d paid on the car to date and broke even. I only buy liability insurance and high BI/PD limits.

I have a good record and I am sure they were happy to take my money. $10500 was actually a little more than I thought I would get offered.

I suppose that if I hadn’t filed the claim I could have. It is now part that of the public record that it was “totaled” so I have to get it certified before returning it to the streets.

I was expecting them to offer 1/10th that amount. Strikes me as a pretty good deal.

To get it certified, does that mean it has to be repaired?

yes, and inspected. I don’t think it will be too bad. If I just wanted to turn it into a track car I wouldn’t have to do any of that.
