There is nothing more expensive in the world than an older, formerly expensive, car...

I just got back from a visit to my folk’s place back in SoCal, and whilst there drove around in their pair of W210s; 2000 sedan for dad, 2002 wagon for mom. Being retired, they don’t accumulate a lot of miles on their vehicles any more and rarely drive more than just a few miles from the house, so the problem with mom’s car doesn’t pop up during most driving.

After about 10-15 miles of driving, usually at freeway speeds, the car develops a rather violent shaking and vibration that appears to be speed dependent and correlated to speed; having experienced it first hand it’s nothing compared to the terror I experienced when my crappy Ford Windstar lost a wheel weight, but it’s still scary enough. After a few miles it seems to go away. Dad and I were driving, the noise and vibration popped up but then went away a mile or two later when we slowed down due to traffic; I don’t know if it went away because of time or speed. The same thing happened on the way home, ironically on the other side of the same freeway where we felt it before, but I don’t think that’s related. We slowed down again (LA traffic - it’s a constant...) and it went away again. Things opened up a few miles down the road and we floored it on a transition, got it back up to 65-70 but the noise/vibration did not return, and the rest of the drive was just fine.

There’s something else that happened to that car recently, but I don’t know if it’s related. Apparently mom got a flat tire on the right rear and drove on it for a couple of trips. Dad noticed it and put on the spare before taking it to Costco for new tires. In the process of putting on the spare he failed to notice that there was a second set of lug bolts for use with the spare that are a little shorter than the ones for the standard alloys. I haven’t looked at a parts diagram to see what he might have hit by using the longer lug bolts on the spare, but it might have something to do with why mom says that the parking brake is harder to apply than it used to be, and is harder to press than on dad’s nearly identical car. Also keep in mind that she hasn’t been driving much in the last few weeks because she just had her left knee replaced, so I don’t know if the brake difficulty is because of her new knee or because of something caused by the use of the incorrect lug bolts (or none of the above - it is a 15 year old car after all...)

They did leave the car with their trusted mechanic, and he checked out that right rear corner and didn’t find anything amiss. He also took the car home at night, driving it several extra miles at highway speed, but couldn’t reproduce the problem.

So, any clue what’s going on? It doesn’t happen until after several miles of driving and then goes away. It remains constant, for several minutes, before disappearing, usually after slowing down. The frequency of the vibration appears to be speed-related, so it’s unlikely to be an accessory like a power steering pump or air conditioning compressor. It’s a rather low-frequency vibration felt throughout the entire vehicle, so it’s tough to pinpoint the location. The wrong lug bolts were used when putting on the spare, but that may or may not be an issue.

Sorry to say I have no idea, but if the pictured wagon is your mom’s car, that might be a problem - the pic is of a pre-facelift/pre-2000 car :)

The long bolts usually damage parking brake parts, so almost certainly are causing what your mom is complaining about with that. As for the vibration, my best guesses are a u-joint (probably on the front prop shaft if it’s 4matic), or with bushings (probably front lower, or rear lower). Does the vibration come through the steering wheel or seat more? What kind, if any, noise is there when the vibration happens? Does the vibration go away if you put it in neutral? How many miles? Have the engine and trans mounts ever been replaced or checked?

Thank you very much for the info. I’ll check with dad and get some answers to the questions you have asked.

It’s a basic 2WD model. It’s tough to say, but I think it’s felt more through the seat, although it was definitely felt through the wheel. Mind you, the whole car was shaking. I was in the pax seat when it started but I did hold the wheel, solo, and did feel some vibration but it wasn’t worse than what was shaking the rest of the car. The noise was something akin to driving over rough pavement, kind of a low rumble. I don’t recall if we tried putting it in neutral so I’ll ask them to try that test; if the noise/vibration goes away when slipped into neutral what would that indicate? I’ll verify the mileage but I think it’s around 76K. Mounts? I’ll need to ask on that as well.

If it is bushes, why would the problem occur after 10+ miles and then go away? Heat loosening them up? Same thing with mounts. What would cause these items to act up and return to ‘normal’? It has been 30+ years since I took a course on automotive suspensions so I may have forgotten a bit about how to troubleshoot these kinds of issues...
