This week I drove the 4Runner to work every day. I started this because of the weather, and continued because I decided to not leave it sitting for a while with a full tank. What this has to do with the title:

1. People who chose crossovers over wagons are completely right.

Sitting high in traffic is way better than sitting below everything. The view is better, the ingress/egress is better, and the ride is also usually better. If you can get mostly the same dynamics in something that is better, why buy a wagon?

2. Daily drivers don’t need to be enthusiast oriented.

This week has made me want an LS400 again. The step up in comfort and sound deadening in the 4Runner over the FiST is amazing. I love the FiST, but it’s a huuuuugggggeeeeee compromise.. I would be very happy to have a cheap, comfortable, boring, reliable daily driver, as long as it has some power, which rules the 4Runner out.

3. There is a point where slow car fun is taken too far.

If the car can’t hold speed or accelerate up a steep grade, it’s too slow.

Kinja'd!!!

This thing is waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too slow. I start at the base of the hill at 70, at the top I’m at 50. That’s no good. The speed was a good reminder of why it’s been put away.

The 80 isn’t a heck of a lot faster. It once made 212hp for a 5,000lb empty SUV. Add a 50% efficient full time 4wd drivetrain and then subtract 5,000ft of atmosphere and everything’s a struggle.

I still love it to death though.

There were no good crossovers at the time of the Sportcross.

Mine makes a solid sub-100whp.

The sportcross is comically small in traffic, and in every parking lot. Newer “midsize” sedans absolutely dwarf it. I’m having flashbacks to when I DD’d my mom’s Miata, wondering if the Brodozer is about to crush me because he can’t even see me next to him.

Yeah, it’s not called the three-point-slow for nothing.

80 series usually puts our 100-115whp, and that’s coming from a 4.5L

How long is your commute?

I feel like we have similar stables (mine being a second gen 4Runner and an E36 Compact). The E36, especially the Compact, really was not a very luxurious vehicle so it’s probably on-par with or even worse than a FiST as far as creature comforts go. I have no complaints with the Compact if a trip is less than half an hour, I’ll probably still take it just for the fuel economy up to an hour. Over an hour I’ll take the cruise control, quiet exhaust, nicer seats and better ride in the 4Runner. But for a mixed highway/side street 20-30 minute commute I really don’t start getting annoyed by the E36's buzzes, rattles and meh seats.

And yeah, slow-car-fun is referring to something light and quick like a FiST or an E36 or a Miata as opposed to something actually fast like say a Vette or an M3. The 2nd-gens are just slow as fuck.

When I have a little more income to support an engine swap, I want to spray this for a bit.

25 minutes, horrible road quality(I lived in PA, their roads are fantastic in comparison), and horrid traffic due to insanely poor planning. It’s a shitty commute.

10-minute commute on well-maintained Ohio roads: “This Miata is great.”

Visiting family in Detroit for the weekend: “Where is my brother-in-law’s Park Avenue when I need it?”

That’s pretty accurate. If I lived in the first world, and not South Carolina, I wouldn’t mind the stiff suspension. I’m not getting rid of it because of it, but I would love to find a cheap PA Ultra or LS400...

What part of sc. Anderson? Greenville? I have a ton of relatives in South Carolina so I’m probably familiar with the area

Not really. Grandparents live in Anderson and they have good driving roads but bad quality. I’m also scared to death that I don’t run over a motorcyclist because of the “it’s suggested to wear a helmet rule, but you don’t have to”

Haha- I drove a 22re for 10 years, with 31's. Your v6 was drool worthy compared to my 115 tired horses. It was still fun to drive and went everywhere- I just couldn’t set any records other than biggest piece of rust to fall off at once..

In the eventual review of my FoST that is something I want to touch on - the FiST is fun on curvy, empty roads. It pales in comparison to a focus for the daily grind. The updated FoST is just SO MUCH NICER! The sound deadening and lack of creaks and rattles is amazing.

Also the power of the FoST is perfect - plenty to blow the doors off of lane hogging crossovers and left lane bandits but not nearly so much that you’ll get into trouble

I have a friend with the same tune as me, and a friend with a FoST with Cobb stage 1... The FoST lost. Power isn’t the issue, I need coilovers. Good ones.

You need dynamat. And seam sealer. The FiST as a car is nearly perfect when stock. But like you said the wind noise and road noise and squeaks and rattles....ugh. then the First is just low to the ground but a comfy and quick daily.

Other than the cluster cover thing, I have zero squeaks and rattles. That’s non-existent now due to shoving paper in the gap. Most of my noise issues are of my own doing... Dynamat in the hatch might fix that though. I want to ride in a FiST with good coilovers, but apparently they help the ride a lot.

Whoa there, speedy..

Mine was great until you hit the mountains, if you weren’t driving way ahead and on top of your gears you were in the slow lane.. lucky for me I had some good drivers as grandpas- they showed me how to keep the revs up and look ahead. It still works

I’m not saying all Ohio roads are well maintained, just that the ones I commute on every day are (with one notable exception).

That said, even the rough roads in places like Toledo don’t compare to the broken streets of Detroit. If I lived there rather than just visiting regularly, I’d trade in my Mazda for a plush old Buick or Cadillac.
