Kinja'd!!!

Holy crap I had no idea this existed! I used to drive a Tahoe and loved the glass-or-whole-tailgate-opening option.

On a related note, now that an F31 has been ordered in Laguna Seca Blue, doesn’t that mean BMW Individual charges slightly less for subsequent orders in that same color? I’d read somewhere that the first order in any color was more expensive.

My not-a-Matrix has the glass back. It is pretty convenient.

Can confirm that ZJ Grand Cherokees and MK1 Hyundai Santa Fes have the same option.

My Trailblazer has the double hatch option. I rarely use the glass portion though.

Dates back to the E34 Tourings. They all have it. I opened it once on mine to see if it works, made a mental note to clean the jambs, and then completely forgot about it. I see no use for it as it doesn’t actuate the boot cover.

I’m more a fan of the split-gate. For example on my Jimmy, the back glass lifts, and the remaining portion of the tailgate opens down, so the glass-only lift gives me access to the full opening width.

My parents have an Envoy XL, which does the glass lifts or whole gate lifts, but then you have this massive gate up in the air that requires pretty heavy gas shocks to hold up, and I’ve cracked my head on it way too often because a) it’s a huge gate that curves and doesn’t quite go far enough to stand under all parts of it, and b) it sags slightly.

It’s a shame they didn’t carry it over to the Mk3.

Can confirm, split gate = best gate.

The only negative to split gate, is that you always have to open two gates. If you need to drop something in quick, the twin gate is best. That said: I love the split gate on my old LC and I wish I had twin gate on my VW wagon. I just couldn’t afford the 25k extra to get the BMW.

Good point, if you have a cover/shade in place, I can see how the utility of this feature would be diminished...

Love a good split gate.

Lip to prevent items from rolling out upon hatch opening!

Tailgate bench seating!

I wonder if the car is drivable with the glass open? This would be great for short-distance surfboard transport.

On the Tahoe, I could drive with the glass open, but the ‘hoe’s glass stuck more or less straight back, vs. the more upright position here on the wagon...

Ye’, friends had them as taxis. But I needed the boot space so got the estate.

Nah. Split gate is always best. No need to open the bottom part almost ever, only if you really need to fumble around in there. And it’s a much better seat than one where your legs end up dangling on the probably filthy bumper.

I know several people who are pissed how more and more SUVs are deleting the opening rear glass.

I much prefer opening glass over automagic opening/closing and tailgate foot sensing.
