Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

I was out grabbing lunch at work the other day and there was only one parallel spot left. It was this one. Reserved parking for low emissions, fuel efficient vehicles only. So I had to park there. Just though it was pretty comical on the fuel efficient , high emissions standpoint. Also I have never seen a sign like this before, talk about privilege ...

My fintail runs on somewhat of a gasoline-oil mix depending on the mood it is in, and it gets better mileage than a Cadillac of the same year, so I’d park it there too.

I’d park my Bluetec there without hesitation.

Is this just “give yourself a pat yourself on the back” circlejerking or is it actually enforceable in any way? It seems pretty subjective.

fuel efficient , high emissions standpoint.

Depends on the type of emissions. Your TDI emits relatively little CO2 but quite a lot of NOx. So from a greenhouse gas emissions point of view it’s a low emissions vehicle too.

I wonder this when I park in the “compact car” spot at Whole Foods... Are they going to tow me if I park a minivan there?

The EPA classifies my 5 Series as a compact so I help myself to the “compacts only” spaces whenever I go to the doctor’s.

I always park in the “fuel efficient vehicles only” spots at the Whole Foods. I see it as more of an opinion thing.

Under what definition is a 5 series a compact car?

I mean I park my 4Runner in Compact spaces because it’s small compared to modern cars.

Probably. Note the E92 parked in a compact space at whole foods.

Interior volume.

EPA classifies car size by combined interior & cargo volume. An E39 sedan comes in at about half a cubic foot under the upper limit for their compact designation.

Normally the compact spaces I see are labeled as such because any normal size car won’t fit anyway, so no need to police it. It ends up being a simple case of geometry.

Yeah, I mean, depends which of my vehicles I’m driving, if it’s the family minivan, then that the most efficient one we have, so I should be able to park in the fuel efficient space, because it’s fuel efficient within the cars we own? Makes sense ;). I’d do it, but I’d be worried some green mega douche would screw with my ride.

So the 5 series has a tiny interior for it’s exterior size?

Disability-priority parking spaces are legally enforced as part of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Other marked spots are strong suggestions, but not encoded in law.

Not really, but the EPA is super generous about the sizing just because American cars are generally bigger. American compacts are as big as European mid-size. Interior volume is just a really arbitrary metric to size cars by anyways.
