I’m looking to replace my truck with a newer, slightly used Ram 1500. Came across this one at a local dealership and was shocked how low the price was. So I had a 2 simple questions to the dealership.
I figured it had a few thousand in discounts applied that I wouldn’t qualify for (employee price, military discount, etc). So I just wanted to know would it cost me $2,000 more, or $8,000 more than what it is listed on their website so I know if it’s worth my time or not. Below was the response I received
$11,000 more than what it is listed for on their website. Never mind the discounts, just the extras that they put on the truck from Mopar were 11k and not added in the price listed. I’ll stick to buying used since those don’t have 12 discounts applied to the price for which 3 I would qualify for, if that.

I’m kinda shocked someone came clean with you about the markups by email. I would have expected them to hide that to get you in and then hard sell you. So, I’d say you won here. Smart to have contacted them first.

I feel strange saying this, but if you decide to buy new, maybe you should consider giving this dealer a chance for this reason? At least if you can find out who you dealt with.

I thought about it, but I’m trying to keep the budget towards 30k for the price. And knowing that I won’t get all the discounts that apply towards a new Ram, I’d rather save the 5-10k and buy a 1 year old truck with low miles. I did that last year with my 2015 GMC Sierra, saved a bunch, but I’ve had so many issues with it in the past year I have no confidence that it’ll last to 100k miles.

If you’re in the market for a lifted RAM truck, I highly recommend Sherry4x4. They work closely with Rocky Ridge Trucks and all of the accessories and parts are covered under warranty.
Their website is very nice and their pricing includes both the modifications as well as all available rebates and incentives. You may not qualify for all of them, but they don’t try to hide anything like Szott.

Not to worry, my friends who are GM engineers heard an earful from over it. Trans rebuilt at 40k miles, new rear diff at 51k miles, those are the biggest ones. Had bad shifting and clunking lots of times. My previous job was working 3 years at Chrysler in powertrain calibration, putting more miles on test vehicles than any other department to find and fix drivability issues directly related to calibration. Because of this, I’m overly critical with any vehicle I get into today and immediately start assessing how it drives.

Provided you apply for the discounts (which, holy shit 15 grand in discounts?) they have to sell you the truck for that price, as the mods are pictured in the ad.

I have seen the Big Horn’s going very cheap. Coworkers dad has a 2014 Ram 2500 diesel with only 22k miles on it that I’m interested in. More I think about it the more I want a truck I can drive for 10 years, 200k miles

The diesel engine itself is more expensive to build, has more emissions equipment than a regular gasoline engine. Add to that charge air cooler, extra plumbing, costs can go up pretty quickly. In cases like heavy duty trucks, part of the cost is the upgraded transmission to handle the high torque output. But damn they do hold their values well, annoyingly well.

I was more surprised by this than anything. I was amazed at how mast you can build a 50K diesel truck and have almost no options. I get the higher costs, but the margins must be incredible on them.
