For years I thought 4Matic meant 4 speed auto, I could not understand why they would proudly display that on the back of their cars.

The European brands tend to have multiple versions with different output while using the same displacement. It wouldn’t make sense to use the displacement as an identifier for those. The US tends to get only a small selection of the available options.
3-series: 320i and 330i both have a 2.0T. Also, the 316d, 318d, 320d and 320d ED all have a 2.0T. They do have to differentiate between those versions.
C-Class: C200, C250, C350e are all 2.0T.
