President Ford has always been under rated in my opinion. Not a bad read either.

Totally agree. I mean, he founded a pretty OK car company for starters, which is already impressive.

Yeah, that time he killed a bunch of highjackers isn’t talked about enough in my opinion.

Maj. Bonifas was a graduate of West Point Class of 1966, and had served throughout the Vietnam War. His story, and those of other USMA graduates who went to Vietnam, is told in  The Long Gray Line, a remarkable account written by Rick Atkinson. Chapter 16 is titled The Poplar Tree. It tells much the same story as that given in the article, but it adds this epilog:

Engineers hauled the poplar limbs to Camp Casey south of the DMZ, where they whittled the wood into swagger sticks . Stilwell’s aides shipped a cross-section of the trunk back to the Pentagon; presumably the generals could the rings themselves to determine the tree’s age. Hung on a wall in the National Military Command Center, the trophy bore a plaque that read: “This wood was taken from a tree at Panmunjom. Beneath its branches two American officers were murdered by North Koreans. Around the world, the tree became a symbol of communist brutality and a challenge to national honor. On 21 August 1976, a group of free men rose up and cut it down.

With American rage thus channeled into the destruction of a tree rather than into another Korean war, border tensions began to ease.

Nice. Have you ever thought about doing a history or aircraft podcast. Your always a wealth of information.

Thanks, but that tends to happen when one gets old. The trick is remembering things. I’ve never really thought about anything like a podcast, but I’m an old-fashioned kind of guy, more of a writer than a talker. I remembered this particular incident from having read about the incident many years ago. The irony of Art Bonifas having survived the Vietnam War only to get killed in the DMZ cutting down a tree is almost too much to bear. The Long Gray Line is a weighty book, but it’s well worth the read.

Oh, I’ll keep writing them. It’s nice to have an outlet for my hobby. I grew up loving airplanes, with a tangential interest in WWII. But it was Barbara Tuchman who got me hooked on history. Tuchman is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American historian and a fantastic author. The book that changed me is titled The March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam . In it, Tuchman defines folly as a government or people following a path or a policy that they know to be ruinous, yet they follow it anyway. For examples, she uses the Trojan Horse, the schism in the Catholic church, the American Revolution, and Vietnam. It’s a great read, as are all of her works.
