As my wife drives to Dallas to buy a car on her own for the first time. A car for me. That I haven’t been able to check out beforehand. I have faith that all will go well. Probably. Hopefully. Maybe. Meanwhile I get to sit at work and goof off.

I bought an OBXT on ebay sight on seen last year, so far so good.

Does it have WRX wheels because it originally came with steelies and hubcaps?

If it’s N/A, you’ll be fine. If it’s turbo, prepare your wallet.

I have the feeling there is an interesting back story here.

That’s...quite the opposite experience that I’ve had with turbo and NA Subarus of that generation.

Edit to add: never had any issues with the turbos, have replaced HG after HG on the NA.

I have an OBXT (5-Sp Man.) \. I didn’t care what shape it was in when I received it. I just wanted the platform, and I’m willing to maintain at as long as possible. has 197k-ish miles and still going strong. I love this car!

Really? Never had any HG issues with 05 and up Subarus. And if I’m being honest, the valve cover gaskets are just as synonymous with turbo Subarus as head gaskets are with NA Subarus. Clearly Subaru just fails at gaskets.

Legacy GT here, didn’t realize there was this many on Oppo! I’m currently at 110k :)

My brother has a Legacy GT (5 Sp. Man.) as well. Forged internals, and an STi Turbo with a Cobb AP. Wonderful cars.

Thats what I picked up last year, but with only 62k miles, it’s on the lift at home now getting a timing belt, wilwood brakes, up pipe and down pipe, and some new bushing and mounts....at least it will if I can ever find time to work on it.

Great choice. Are you planning on having it tuned or using an Off-The-Shelf Tune on an AP, once you do the downpipe?

5 speed here too. That sounds like a fun ride although the 5 speed is probably the limiting factor there. Forged internals on the other hand must be great for peace of mind!

Budget for wheel bearings if you haven’t already! Sounds like you’ll be pushing it pretty hard. Still have to spring for the cat-less up pipe.

My brother has forged internals in his Legacy GT, my OBXT is completely stock, and I’ll probably keep it that way for a long time.

Wheel bearings are definitely something all of my Subaru’s have had issues with. I’m always listening, just waiting to hear that worrisome sound. Not sure when/ if I’ll do the cat-less up-pipe. My performance shop has never seen an issue even with their built cars.

I’ve already had to replace 2 cv shafts already....eventually I’ll just drop and STi Drive train in it, just need to find a way to fit the STi Wheel Bearings.

HG issues are always on the NA Subarus or poorly tuned turbo ones with boost spikes.

You would just need the STI knuckles right? Pretty sure I’ve seen a few guys do that swap.

Yeah, hopefully it’s just another case of the internet blowing stuff way out of proportion. I know what you mean about always listening, these cars always got some noise for you!

I thought you’d have to get different CV shafts too. I know Legacy GT Spec B shafts mate up to the STI transmission but I’m not sure about the STi knuckles.

It’s mostly my wife and my mother being terrified that I will be violently eviscerated if I try to ride my SV650 to work all winter, and also my wife knows I’ve always wanted a Subaru wagon.

It’s an n/a, with super high mileage, so to an optimist like myself, that means it was well cared for (I’m gonna be broke 2.3 seconds after it gets home, probably)

I don’t think so, it’s got leather interior, so I assumed those were factory

Just read through the comments and you’ll get an idea of what you’re in store for. Then again, I live in a big rust state so parts are more prone to wear. Best of luck with it, hope all goes well!

This is a 2.5i, 5 speed, leather interior, but with 249k miles. I fully anticipate being broke for most of the winter.

Indeed....I am fortunate enough to work at a dealer, where I get a massive discount on parts and labor, and they let me wrench on my stuff if I want, so I am fairly well prepared.

Those are definitely Impreza wheels, never came on any Legacy Outback. I think the offset is slightly off and they sit too far in the fenders. I’m not 100% on the 05-09 but typically leather on a Subaru means color matched door handles/mirrors as well.

Not to try and scare you but you might want to have her really check stuff out. There is a place around here that will rebuild wrecked Subarus with other wrecked Subarus. Even going as far as to paint the heads of door hinge bolts so it looks like they haven’t been moved.

It could just be a base model that someone swapped nicer wheels and a leather interior or had the cloth covered. I dunno.

So far that looks to be the case...the car came from Indiana to Texas, so it does have some mild corrosion....but other than that, maintenence wise, it looks pretty good. The belts are new, the tires are new, the cats have been replaced in the last few years, air filter is clean, no warning lights, A/C works, and there’s only one tiny spot of scuffed clear coat. I drove it to work this morning to change the oil and slap some decent wiper blades on.
