Audi- Just to see what all the fuss is about. Or, why Oppos would spend so much time and money owning one of these POS.

Kinja'd!!!

VW- I mean, come on. How can you not love that? Throw on a few mods and I’m sure it’d be a hell of a DD. (Minus the whole reliability thing.)

Kinja'd!!!

Volvo- Similar to Audi. Just to see what it’s about.

Kinja'd!!!

Mazada- I wanna see if all the hype is real about them being the best brand for enthusiast.

Chrysler- V8, RWD, luxury sedan, ‘Merican. What’s not to love?

Mostly the Allroad, since that’s the one many an Oppo has ruined their life for. But really any. I also want a tast of German luxury and from what I read BMW has lost their way (as well as being stereotypical douchey) MB is also on the table, but ehhhhhh.

The problem isn’t so much the lack of feedback as it is people complaining so much that they just isolated the driver from the outside. Journalists and keyboard racers (read: people who always have an opinion but never buy anything) like to complain and lament about lack of steering and road feel. But think about it, would you really like to commute in a car where you can feel every expansion joint, every pothole, and every imperfection in the road? I assure you that you wouldn’t.

My BRZ is great for driving feel. It’s horrible as a daily. It’s tolerable as a daily. Yes, it’s decent and it’s great for someone who needs to get to work, track, and auto-x. However, I can feel every expansion joint, the car actually launches you up if you go over a railroad crossing at the speed limit and the pedals let you feel the engine and road. That sounds great for the pedals, until you actually have to go on a road trip and your foot goes numb.

My point being, people complain about everything. BMW has not lost their way. They’ve just grown up. My analogy is BMW is like the pianist who was a childhood/teenage prodigy but realized they needed to get a job that pays more to afford the lifestyle they wanted. They got “boring” and did what they needed to surivive. When the mood strikes, they can rip out a perfect rendition of Bach and everyone’s jaw drops to the ground. That’s what the 1M, M235i and M8 GTE are. BMW can still make a crazy good car. They just don’t exclusively make them because they realize they need to pay the bills.

Hah! I’d do that if I could sell my BRZ. But then if I did that I’d just be temtped to get an e92 M3.

I know if I got the 335i I would just keep thinking, “what if I had gotten an M3?” It happened with the BRZ. I constantly think about, “what if I had gotten a WRX?” I’m not saying the 335i isn’t good. You pretty much sold me on the 335i, but with my limited funds and lack of garage space, I think the e92 M3 would be a good do-it-all kind of car that would scratch the itch I’ve had since I was 8.

I’m an Audi fan, but even I wouldn’t subject myself to the allroad. Had a Q7 as my gateway audi, and loved it. Drove like a sports car, cornered like a much lower car as well, definitely my favorite full size SUV. So after that, I picked up a B8 S4 6mt, and that was a blast. I owned it for 3 years, got it with 40k, and sold it with 80k. It was dead reliable. Wanted a bigger car, and depreciation had done the Lords work on the D3 S8s, so I sold off the S4 and now have an 09 S8. Love it. It’s due for an intake de carboning with the next service, so I’ll let you know how much I love it after that ;). But I knew that going in, so no surprises. The two real shocks from this car, after having the S4 are the oil changes require 12 liters of oil and the 20" tires are at least $100 more per corner than the 19" tires for the S4. But other than that, I’m really digging this car. I would love to open up the exhaust for better sound, but that’ll have to wait for a bit. I wouldn’t recommend these for a person who couldn’t wrench on it themselves though. I have access to a nice shop with a hoist, so I don’t dread the inevitable repairs down the road, but to a person without access, I would think twice.

Counter point: the pre-LCI F30 sucked to drive. It had no feel and didn’t drive like a BMW. The LCI F30 320i had felt like a BMW. It’s easy to hate on a car if you haven’t drive it. I really wanted to hate the 320i loaner I had, but I just couldn’t. I was worried about having to find something else to drive when I can’t drive my e92 any more, and it looks like I’ll just be on the search for a 6MT LCI F30.

Not really, if a super nice car that I really liked popped up, i’d sell it but right now I’m not really sure what exactly I want next that ticks all the boxes like the e92 does. At the same time, I wouldn’t mind getting out of it before it hits 100k simply because the value will plummet once I cross that. I like trading my cars in + putting down a nice downpayment whenever I get a new (to me) car so that way I barely have to finance anything, if at all.

But part of me just wants to keep it forever. Been a great car and I still smile everyday I drive it.

Yeah, I’m in Virginia about 20 minutes outside DC. My C300 is automatic (I think only the RWD models came in manual). Feel free to take it for a spin if you are ever in the area. TBH it’s a nice car, but it just isn’t that engaging to drive. Maybe the manual would make up for a lot of that.

The S4 6MT is a great car, I love the interiors and they just look great. That S8 must be a beast to daily drive! You don’t see those around too often, but when you do, the presence of them is just insane.

Exactly! Realistically I would only need a little more cash on top of the BRZ a d I’d get myself into an e9x M3 and it’s actually be able to do all I need. Daily and a few track days a year. I don’t need a car to carve canyons and cruise at night because I don’t have the time for it. I wish I did but I don’t. The M3 would work for what I need it to do. Gas mileage though....now that’s a tiny flaw in my plan.

Now that I can’t argue with. You actually drove it and that’s what matters. My issue is people who don’t drive them but just repeat what they read online as if they have driven it.

Speaking of which, you’re one of I think 3 or 4 e9x M3 owners on here I know. How’s your gas mileage in traffic in it?

Yeah, I don’t care for the new gen of the Q7, looks too much like a wagon, but not as pretty as a wagon. We had an ‘07, would’ve liked the face lifted version though, those are still one of the best looking SUVs IMO. Loved the S4, it just got too small, and it is nice having a the autotragic for daily driver duties in traffic. The thing blends in well though. But holy hell does it accelerate. Stops well too, but the corners is where it shows its heft. I really want to uncork the exhaust and I might just buy some stainless mandrel bends to make my own resonator deletes. I haven’t seen an exhaust for these come in under a grand, and it’s really simple piping, other than the x-pipe portion, but I could buy enough generic pieces to make two exhausts and still be money ahead of buying one of the built ones. When I do the intake cleaning and plugs, I’ll take a better look underneath to see what I’d need to grab, but could be a fun project. I really want to hear the V10 wail, I just don’t want to commit to a muffler delete, or drop a couple grand on a system. That just seems excessive.

How are you doing your decarbon? Shells or chemical? I’m going to start with chemical and see how it goes. I can lay it up for a while so I can take my time. I like the walnut shell results, but I’ve also seen shots of the shells getting behind the injector o-rings somehow, but I think those photos were from BMWs actually, not the audis, but it made me steer away from that method for now.

If it doesn’t give you problems, then there’s no reason to get rid of it. I mean if it’s reliable you can always save up for a down payment even if you car isn’t worth that much.

I thought you had a 6MT C300 for some reason. I really want to drive one to see what it’s like. I’ve driven a few C300s and I liked the way they drove. I’m not expecting a BMW drive, I expected more luxury and it does a better job at than the my BMWs. I was thinking about a Benz because I drive 75 miles round trip on the highway, and a luxury car might have been better suited.

Yeah there’s no way to sugarcoat it, the gas mileage isn’t great. And the maintenance cost (parts cost really) will be higher than your used to. I say you should go test drive an M3 and see if it’s worth it. (I’m guessing it will be)

Good call on the exhaust. I’m actually doing a little exhaust project myself. People on forums found a way to imitate the $1400 BMW Performance exhaust by cutting the stock mufflers open, removing the stock perforated pipes in there and replacing them with straight pipes, then putting it all back together. Sounds just like the $1400, but can be done for less than $300 at a muffler shop! Gonna try to do it myself, although I’m not much of a welder.

I’m going with the walnuts. That seems to be much faster than going with chemicals or doing it by hand. I have a friend who bought all the tools to do it, so I’m just gonna pick up the shells from harbor freight and study up on the DIY’s. According to the forums, it’s actually not very difficult to do, so I’m hoping it doesn’t stump me when I try it out.

The shells also seem to be super effective, getting the intake valves looking new again, while most BMW forum posts say the chemicals get about 80% of the job done, then they go in and get the rest out after. I may be wrong, but I feel like the shells are safer too. They’ll burn up if they go anywhere they aren’t supposed to.

That’s a good point, and unless something really cool pops up, it’s what I’ll likely do.

I will say the C300 is awesome on the highway. I just put on cruise control and go. I got 33mpg driving down to Richmond last weekend. Interior is a better place to be, and it’s also been a pretty trouble free car.

Have you thought about stepping up to an E-class or a 5-series? Those IMO just feel a lot more luxurious and comfortable than the c/3. A diesel 5 or e class would be a great commuter, and you’d get awesome mileage.

You’re probably right about the shells. I’ve got another guy that volunteers with me that has a BMW to do as well, so maybe we will go that route.

That muffler mod sounds like a good way to go too. Shouldn’t be too tough to reweld the muffler either, as long as you don’t tweak the edges of the metal cutout so it lays back in nicely.   Nice to have a modding community for your car, the S8 crowd isn’t so much into mods, at least not the original owners. Now that they are getting cheap, maybe the mods will start to happen more frequently.

Good luck! Is there a noticeable reduction in performance/efficiency in your car right now? I haven’t really noticed any, but I feel like once I do the blasting the car wil just feel *that* much better.

And yeah, it’s great having a big modding community. People call the n54 engine the “new 2jz” because of its ease of making power out of. I’m not gonna do anything crazy with it, I wanna keep it as reliable as I can haha. I can imagine why the S8 doesn’t have a huge modding community, but I’m sure the cheaper they get the more and more people will be experimenting with them. That’s exactly what is happening to the 335i right now. There’s constantly new stuff being developed for us 2nd/3rd owners.

It’s not a noticeable issue, but I’ve had the cold start misfires when I first got it, so I ran a can of the CRC GDI intake cleaner through the intakes, and that solved those, but that was a stop gap to get me a little time. It idles rougher than I would like and it takes quite a few cranks to fire upon startup, so it all points to carbon deposits, but I’m hoping there not too bad, however, all the info I’ve seen about these leads me to think they are pretty nasty. Definitely hoping for a nice performance boost after the cleaning. I try to give it some revs when I drive, but it’s easy to see how these things load up under normal driving. The v10 loves to just lope along in between 2-4K rpm all day long. You have to try to get it to 7k, but when it does, it sounds glorious.

Hopefully these will start to be modded a bit. Time will tell.
