Kinja'd!!!

About this generation of 4runner. It’s a ‘96. My buddy just picked this up and is planning to use it for small trips, long trips, offroading, overlanding, etc. High mileage but runs great with the only “issue” being scratched up paint. Any build advice? It’s an auto with “all the available options” according to the seller at least.

What year is it? There were different 4wd systems on the Limited depending on year.

Basically...

96-98: part-time, shift on the fly 4wd with low range

99-00: multi-mode with 2wd, 4 auto, 4H, 4L; optional locking rear differential

01-02: multi-mode but with traction control and no rear locker option

Good at:

-Bringing people together as every possible social group likes this thing: hicks, surfers, normal people, not normal people, etc.

-Not breaking down

Bad at:

-Corners

-Going straight

-Not dissolving into orange ash

The ones around here are actually very good at not rusting. I could never live in a place that has rust problems. I visit the midwest and it actually upsets me to see the vehicles, some less than 10 years old, with serious rust.

Had an 01 with a rear e-locker. I thought 01 was the last year but not certain.

3rd gen runners are pretty solid. These came with the 3.4l v6, TRD made an optional supercharger. Not all are 4x4, so look closely. Be sure to inspect for rust. I personally really enjoyed driving one. I’d buy another if it was NP.

Ive owned two, both 2002s. They are AAAMAZING and you will fall in love with it. Everybody who owns one falls in love with it.

Good:

- bulletproof motor and trans

- goes anywhere. Helps if you have the optional rear locker.

- Very good looking imo

- Really fun to drive around town. Tall as hell for its size, relatively torquey, and decent steering.

Bad:

- Both of mine had frame rust. Second one had a fist sized hole and had to be ditched. Very common problem.

- Slow.

- Tippy

-my 4x4 system went out a lot. More common on the newer models with push button awd.

- Toyota tax

- bland interior

You should also check out the following:

- r50 pathfinder: Like a 4runner but faster, comfier, and nimbler with a way better interior. Also owned one

- 2nd generation montero: Honestly the best in the segment at this point for the price. Every time I buy a car I pray a clean 2nd gen montero will come up for sale near me. Great trucks.

- 2nd gen trooper with a stick: Great truck but the automatic trans will grenade so get a stick.

One of my best friends has owned 4 4runners since i’ve known him, two were this gen, one of which is currently his DD.

He obviously loves them (is a car guy, his weekend car is a LS1 swapped 240SX) but he literally had to sell the one he owned before buying his current one because the AT was driving him crazy. His current one is a M/T and having driven both of them, i can confirm that the AT felt awful and slow all the time in comparison. The manual certainly isn’t fast, but it doesn’t feel underpowered either.

Its a nice truck with 200K miles or so on it, still looks good, still drives nice, doesn’t really feel tired or anything.

He comments on Jalopnik fairly regularly under “Foxbody” so if you happen to see him on there, hit him up.

You could also get one with a 2.7L, but why would you.

These actually corner pretty well. I’ve driven worse handling cars. And as long as they’ve been maintained, they go straight... Slowly.

Would go well with your 5-spd 2-door 4x2 3rd gen.

Edit: wait, maybe i’m thinking of the 2nd gen that came with two doors.

The 96's had some head gasket issues, but other than rust and some control arm(?) issues.

THEY’RE EPIC.

I might be biased. Like anything it’s a 20 year old vehicle and will need maintenance as such. Watch out for rust, might even want to under coat it. Off road apparently a transmission cooler is a good first upgrade. Also you can fit 33s with a 1 inch lift.

If you have any more detailed questions, I own one and will be happy to answer.

It’s a running joke here in Brazil that SW4s (what the 4Runner is called here) will spontaneously tip over.

It probably isn’t all that bad

Hey man, not sure you saw but I posted about the Sunburst Yellow Miata... Sadly, it didn’t last long and it’s already gone :(

Hopefully I find another one at some point :)
