Kinja'd!!!

Low medium or high, what would you pick?

Low - a PAIR of air springs for $175 shipped (“direct replacement” reman quality)

Medium - $150 per spring + $30 for shipping (Arnott bags, no stone guards. Reman)

High - $230 per spring shipped. (new OE)

Im loosing my freaking mind trying to decide what to do. I really don’t want to pay $500 for OE springs, but they would be completely new springs and no remains.

the Arnotts have a good rep and a good warrantee but its still $330 and the fitment is “universal” which means a swivel on the air valve...I.e. another place to leak

The cheapos are just remained factory units with ???? bags.

These should last no more than 5 years until we either sell it or I assume it and turn it into my overland rig at which point it will be coil conversion with lift. Not ready to go coils just yet.

Thoughts?

All seem to be decent. If the Arnotts have a decent warranty, I would go with them. I seldom go cheapest, but I also seldom go most expensive.

Arnotts are on the top of my list, but I wonder if that swivel valve and the lack of stone protection will come back to haunt me.

I am a huge fan of OE parts, even if they are expensive. Cost has to come from somewhere. That being said, I have had pretty good luck with OEM remanufactured parts. For example, a Bosch alternator remanufactured or certified by Bosch.

If the reviews are good on the Med, I would prob go that route. Especially if they only need to last 5 years.

I’d go OEM. For the $130 price difference over 5 years, the difference becomes negligible and I’d have a little more peace of mind.

I’d get the best available. One less thing to worry about. You’ll be beating yourself up over it if the valve ends up being an issue

Will it see overland duty? Can the old guards be transferred over? If the warranty and reviews are decent, I wouldn’t worry much about the swivel. But if you’re having concerns, OEM might be the way to go.

Buy expensive, tried and tested - cry once. Buy cheap - cry a hundred times.

If you can afford it and you know they’ll work and work hard for you, go OE. IMHO.

light trails, mostly stuff like cathedral valley and such. As for stone guards? no. if and when this becomes an overland rig it will be lifted and coil converted. For now the ride height leveling is a major perk for towing.

Medium - I like remanufactured stuff because that means the company has likely been over the thing twice, and you should not mess around with suspension or tires, because that’s what keeps you on the road.

Personally I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but I’m also not the person driving it.

my bosche reman starter gave me some trouble recently, but I’ll forgive it if it never does it again.

myself and a good friend like to bet on sports. the unspoken agreement is we generally have to agree on a line we like if we’re gonna put something down. misery loves company, et cetera.

anyways, the first bet we made for football season was alabama -7 against FSU. i tend to think that betting opening week for football is a death wish, doubly so for alabama who is generally the favorite for the championship (with inflated lines as a result). i was against it. but he said it well - “no one is gonna call you stupid for taking alabama when they’re giving up less than a touchdown.” even if the bet doesn’t pan out, you won’t kick yourself for putting in money on a solid line for the title favorite.

the point of all this, is if i’m on the fence, that’s how i treat OEM stuff. maybe it would have worked out with something cheaper, maybe it won’t work out at all, but i’ll never have to wonder what i was thinking putting my money on it.

I went with the arnotts based on what I’ve heard from people who’ve used them. hoping for the best, which is all you can do with bags anyway.

I saw you already made your decision but I’ll ask a question regardless. If the replacement turns out to be crap and blows somewhere in a very inconvenient way - how bad will that be?

Luckily* for me, when it comes time for strut replacement on the VR I only have once choice. The $300 per strut expensive choice.

*defined loosely.

Well the bags are more or less dead now and I’ve been driving around on them. Basically you just ride on the stops which are about 3 inches thick rubber. its a crude backup suspension

Medium is what I woulda gone with too in that situation. Don’t you have a Land Cruiser or Lexus equivalent? That’s cool that it has at least something to hold it up. The same cannot be said for every Lincoln Town Car and Navigator with blown bags.
